Corrupt politicians and business leaders throughout Africa may have just met their downfall as citizens of multiple countries are using Blockchain to expose dirty dealings happening throughout the continent.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria who wants the people of Africa to fight back against corruption that has plagued many of the countries in Africa. He thinks that Blockchain could be the solution that Africa has been looking for when it comes to combating corruption.

Currently taking place in Perth, Western Australia, the 2018 Africa Downunder Conference hosted by Murdoch University, Olusegun Obasanjo spoke passionately about how African citizens have been kept in the dark about their countries finances and feel that nothing ever comes of benefit toward the citizens. The former President said ‘These countries are calling out for transparency and accountability for what deals are being made behind closed doors. There needs to be a way to fight illicit financial flows.’

5 out of the top 10 recipients of International Aid around the globe were African countries, having billions of dollars a year received. Unfortunately, due to high levels of corruption, this aid is hardly ever seen by the vast population, leaving over 80% of most African countries to survive on less than $2 a day.

Africa is a continent filled with some of the world’s richest deposits of oil, gold and diamonds. Rarely do the resource profits go towards the people who live in some of the hardest conditions on the planet.

Olusegun Obasanjo seeks to put an end to the corruption that has run rampant through the decades that has led to the creation of child labor, conflict zones and high levels of poverty. Corruption that has destroyed the lives of millions, so the few can live in luxury and he believes blockchain could change this.

The hope lies with blockchain’s ability to complete an audit chain and while blockchain continues to develop and become more refined so far it shown compelling cases across Africa’s mining industry.

As we have seen from various reports coming out of Africa, whether it be Mr. Bagorogo in Uganda preaching the Gospel of Bitcoin or Akon building a Crypto City in Senegal, African citizens are once again proving they have had enough of the corruption, they’ve had enough of the struggle and they’ve had enough of being told to maintain the status quo. These brave men and women are refusing to roll over and accept this is the way life is and instead are willing to fight back economically in anyway they can. These are the real Cryptopioneers and it will be them in years to come to thank when Bitcoin becomes the mainstream currency used around the globe.
