Buterin Donates 100 ETH to Roman Storm's Defens

This donation, worth around $240,000, marks the third time Buterin has contributed to Storm’s defense.

Tornado Cash is a tool that helps people make anonymous cryptocurrency transactions, but its use has sparked legal trouble for its developers.

Why Roman Storm Is in Trouble

Roman Storm has been charged with helping people use Tornado Cash for illegal activities, even though he argues that the tool is open-source software that anyone can use—not something controlled by its developers. Storm has pleaded not guilty, claiming he only wrote the code and shouldn’t be held responsible for how others use it.

However, U.S. Judge Katherine Failla recently ruled that the case against Storm should move forward. She pointed out that the charges aren’t baseless and Storm’s argument of being unfairly prosecuted isn’t enough to dismiss the case. If found guilty, Storm could face up to 45 years in prison. The thought of such a long sentence has sent shockwaves through the crypto community. Many see this case as a wake-up call about the risks of creating open-source software, especially when it comes to privacy and financial tools like Tornado Cash.

Storm isn’t alone in this fight. Many in the crypto world have rallied around him, showing their support both emotionally and financially. So far, his legal defense fund has received 148 different payments, totaling over 327 ETH, which is worth about $785,000 at current market prices.

In addition to Buterin’s contributions, there’s also been a big push from JusticeDAO, a group formed to raise money for the Tornado Cash developers. The DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) has already raised over 654 ETH, valued at around $1.5 million.

Vitalik Buterin’s Support

Vitalik Buterin’s continued support for Storm has been a huge boost for the developer and his legal team. After the latest donation, Storm expressed his deep gratitude to Buterin, saying, “I can’t describe how much it means to me. Thank you for your long-lasting support.” Buterin’s donations show that even in tough times, the crypto community sticks together. As the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed,” and Buterin has certainly lived up to that by standing by Storm throughout this legal battle.

Storm’s legal troubles are far from over, but with ongoing support from people like Buterin and groups like JusticeDAO, he’s not facing the fight alone. The outcome of this case could have huge implications for developers everywhere, especially those working on open-source projects. For now, Storm’s supporters are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping for the best.
