The documentary, made by filmmaker Cullen Hoback attempts to solve one of the biggest mysteries in the tech world. It airs at 9 pm PT on HBO.
In the documentary, Hoback interviews many early Bitcoin supporters, portraying them as protectors of Satoshi Nakamoto’s vision. They believe that Bitcoin offers a way to escape government control and banking systems. Let’s discover more about how this documentary informed us about Bitcoin’s Creator.
HBO Documentary Explores the Mystery of Bitcoin’s Creator
Two key figures they criticize are Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, who have both expressed strong opposition to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. Dimon is known for calling Bitcoin a “fraud,” while Warren has pushed for tougher regulations on crypto, siding with traditional banks.
One of the key characters in the documentary is Samson Mow, who sees himself as an ambassador for Bitcoin. Another major figure is Adam Back, the founder of Blockstream, a company that promotes Bitcoin adoption.

The spotlight, however, is on Peter Todd, a core developer of Bitcoin and a former follower of Adam Back. The film suggests that Todd might be the person behind the Satoshi Nakamoto pseudonym. This claim is sure to raise eyebrows in the crypto world, which has been guessing Nakamoto’s true identity for years. However, Peter said that he is not Satoshi.
Other well-known people in the crypto community also make appearances in Money Electric. One of them is Roger Ver, also known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” who was an early promoter of Bitcoin. Ver has recently faced legal trouble, including tax evasion charges. Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and now a big supporter of crypto, also makes a brief appearance. Dorsey even changed the name of his company from Square to Block to show his dedication to the Bitcoin cause.

The film explores important events in the history of Bitcoin, such as the “block size wars,” where developers argued over how Bitcoin should evolve. It also touches on the rise of other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, which some Bitcoin supporters dismiss as “altcoins” or “shitcoins”. The documentary also highlights how the U.S. government is trying to regulate the growing crypto industry.
If Peter Todd is not Satoshi, Who can be?
One top suspect for the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is Hal Finney, and there are several compelling reasons for this belief. Finney was diagnosed with ALS in 2009, the same year Bitcoin went live, which adds an intriguing layer to his connection with the cryptocurrency. He was also one of the first people to receive a Bitcoin transaction directly from Satoshi, highlighting his early involvement in the project. As an expert in cryptography, Finney had the technical skills necessary to create Bitcoin.
HBO documentary suggests Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto. I disagree.
My #1 suspect is Hal Finney.
– Diagnosed with ALS in 2009, the same year Bitcoin went live.
– One of the first to receive a BTC transaction from Satoshi.
– Expert in cryptography
– Active in the BTC… pic.twitter.com/MLJRuWhnp1— DivXMaN (@crypto_div) October 9, 2024
He remained active in the Bitcoin community until he died in 2014, and his writing style bears a striking resemblance to that of Satoshi. Additionally, after his passing, Finney opted for cryopreservation, leaving open the possibility that he could one day be revived and potentially access billions, if not trillions, in Bitcoin—should he indeed be Satoshi.
