Earlier this week, during the IBM Think 2019 Conference, an IBM executive has hinted at a cross-border payment announcement that includes the Stellar Blockchain.
Jesse Lund, IBM’s VP for blockchain solutions, has shared some interesting news during the IBM Think 2019 Conference in San Francisco earlier this week. According to Lund, IBM is about to announce a new product which allows payments “from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world.”
In an interview with Fred Schebesta’s from the Daily Exchange, Lund revealed that the official announcement will come in a few weeks. Lund said:
“I’ll be keynoting a major event in Singapore with my friend [Stellar founder] Jed McCaleb. We’ll be talking about a special announcement about the product and what it includes.”
Although the exact nature of the partnership with Stellar has not been revealed, nor more exact information about the new product has been given, Lund his remarks do reveal it will be something exciting and ambitious:
“We hope to have within three to five years hundreds of endpoints, hundreds of operators providing access, enabling us to have global coverage. The ability to send money from any place in the world to any other place in the world.”
Interestingly enough, Lund also said something in the interview that later has been removed from the video, with an abrupt cut at around the 4:12 mark. Apparently, Lund said something that should not be common knowledge outside of IBM just yet. Lund said:
“Let’s just say we’re gonna be supporting more than 50 countries out of the gate, 30-40 currencies, and enough market makers to drag along 30 or 40 banks. So we’ll have a significant portion of the world covered and our goal is to continue to expand that network and to provide global coverage within 3-5 years where you can actually send remittances in a consistent way, immediately, at a very low cost, from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world.”
It is no secret that IBM is a fan of the Stellar blockchain. The partnership between the Tech giant and Stellar has been mentioned already multiple times in 2018. It will, therefore, be interesting to see what 2019 will bring for Stellar and its token Lumens (XLM).
