As per news announced by Brave on Twitter, the new version of Brave Browser will enable users to tip on ad-free video platform Vimeo and social news site Reddit, using Brave’s native Basic Attention Token (BAT).

This feature was first tested on its testing browser Brave Nightly. After a successful trial, the tipping feature was first introduced on Twitter. A week later it was expanded to Reddit and Vimeo.

Before going live on the main Brave browser, Reddit previously announced, that it will soon come up with native support for cryptocurrency-based tipping. These features were first developed in preview-only mode. The tipping function is likely to have the look and feel of the Lightning powered-tip button on Twitter. This can be enabled via Tippin.me—but with a different symbol.

Previous tipping efforts on Reddit and Vimeo

Cointelegraph mentions that Brave’s initiative to introduce a tipping option on Reddit and Vimeo is not the first attempt. In 2012, Vimeo rolled out its Tip Jar feature, allowing content creators to get donations of $1 to $500 via credit card or PayPal. However, the service was shut down on July 2015 as Vimeo focused on another tool for content monetization called Vimeo On Demand.

In 2013, Reddit initiated a content tipping option in Bitcoin (BTC) through the bitcoin tip bot. The service was terminated before another Bitcoin tipping option called Changetip went live in 2014. However, Changetip was also shut down in 2017 after recording 100,000 sign-ups and more than 350,000 tips.
