CoinGecko is hosting its first-ever conference this week. ‘GeckoCon – NFTs Gone Wild’ is taking place on 17th to 19th November 2021 from 8 AM to 2 PM EST. We are looking at the session on The Next Internet.
There will be lectures, fireside chats, and workshops covering a wide range of NFT topics during the course of the three-day virtual conference.

The speakers at this session are:
- Georgi Georgiev, Moderator – CryptoPotato’s editor-in-chief
- Christopher Clay – Game Director at Immutable
- Sandra H – NFT & Metaverse Futurist at Zilliqa
What the metaverse actually is?
When asked what Metaverse really is, Sandra Helou answered: “Metaverse is not really going to replace meeting someone face to face. Metaverse just adds a new layer to it. It is a new form of connecting with others. I think Coronavirus already shifted this. We were separated by a screen and we are attached to our technology. Now when we talk about Metaverse in general it doesn’t seem as big a thing”.
Christopher Clay followed up on Sandra Helou’s response and said that Metaverse doesn’t have to be held by one single entity. Also, he thinks that Facebook is going with the wrong approach.
The third speaker Georgi Georgiev also had an answer to this question. He thinks that a lot of people don’t realize how much we’ve already stepped into the Metaverse. If we look back about 15 years ago or when Facebook started, most of the human interactions happened face to face. Now, Facebook and other applications allow us to connect with each other when we are in different places in the world.
What is the biggest challenge?
Georgi Georgiev stated that one of the biggest challenges is education. He asked Sandra Helou and Christopher Clay, what are their biggest challenge?
Sandra Helou agreed with Georgi Georgiev that education is one of the challenges. For her, the most important is education about the core elements of blockchain. Such as:
- What is a wallet?
- What is an NFT?
- or What is IPFS?
- How to secure and take control of your NFT?
Sandra Helou also stated that Zilliqa has focused on how to interact with blockchain without you knowing that you did. This is also one of the challenges.
Christopher Clay identified scaling and environmental impact of blockchain as the biggest challenges right now, especially in gaming. Those are the things that Immutable focuses on. He gave the game World of Warcraft as an example. This game would need all the electricity in the world if the game converted to a blockchain.
What is the future?
Sandra Helou answered on this question: ”First it was buy cryptocurrency and hold. As we progressed and as the industry turned to blockchain, the narrative changed. We moved from token holder to token user. Now, except that we hold cryptocurrencies we use them for a growing ecosystem and to push forward innovation. It is a future of more use and more innovation. We don’t need to look at cryptocurrencies and Metaverse as a new world, it’s the present world”.
Christopher Clay said that he doesn’t know what future will bring, but gave his opinion on gaming. He thinks that in the future, gaming will devote a lot of time to the growing ecosystem. One way to do this will be to pay the players to start playing the game. Players will spend that money playing. In this way, the ecosystem grows and money remains in the ecosystem.
Georgi Georgiev gave his opinion on the future: “In my personal opinion online gaming is going hand-in-hand with blockchain. I think it is because that’s what players want in the long run. Even if they don’t realize that. Right now, it’s just a matter of handing it to them in a way which is scalable and effective.”
