meta metaverse facebook

On October 28th, 2021, Facebook launched Meta, a virtual ecosystem where people can socialize, collaborate, learn, and play. However, following its launch, the metaverse platform has been faced with a lot of drawbacks.

According to a recent survey, involving 1,000 U.S. adults, about 77% of people do not want Facebook’s Meta. That is, an estimated three out of four persons indicated that they do not want a metaverse owned by Facebook. Pointing out the company’s history of data protection, security, and integrity issues.

Decentralized or Centralized Metaverse?

Also, 87% of people who participated in the survey indicated their preference for a metaverse on a decentralized network like Cardano or Ethereum. Furthermore, this will assure users of a truly trustless, secure, and decentralized environment. However, Meta may not be able to completely pull off a truly decentralized metaverse.

Also, there is the issue of top tech companies like Facebook and Microsoft dominating the fast-budding metaverse ecosystem. About 77% of the survey participants indicated this as a point of concern.

Meta (Formerly Facebook) and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, over time have shown a real penchant for monopoly. The company currently owns Whatsapp and Instagram, two social media giants, each with more than one billion users. So the concern of big tech companies trying to monopolize the Metaverse ecosystem is justified.

Is Zuckerberg Trying to Monopolize the Metaverse?

Zuckerberg has denied any claims of trying to monopolize the metaverse ecosystem. Disclosing that, the virtual world will operate like the internet.

In conclusion, there seems to be a lot of distrust around Zuckerberg and the entire Meta conglomerate. People are unsure of what the future holds for the metaverse if it falls into the hand of already existing tech giants. Hence the skepticism surrounding Meta and its proposed metaverse platform.
