The crypto markets have been quiet for the last couple of weeks. And they will probably remain so until Trump takes office on the 20th. But quiet news cycles doesn’t mean nothing is happening. The projects that are in building mode are working hard to get new, better features and user experiences ready for their communities. One of these projects is Walrus Protocol.
Let’s see what Walrus has been up to over the last couple of weeks.
New, Improved Testnet
Walrus has been in testnet since October. And it’s been going well. In fact, on the 16th, the next phase of the testnet will start.
Happy New Year, Walrus Friends!
We’re thrilled to announce the next phase of the Walrus Testnet journey. We have reached a stage in development where it is beneficial to redeploy the Walrus Testnet. Here are the key details on this redeployment:

For most things like staking or use of your $WAL testnet tokens, you don’t have to do anything. But some things like blobs, which are big pieces of unstructured data, you may need to download and save again. So read up on this post from the project X account as well as their Discord so you are getting the latest info.
Moving Private, Decentralized AI Forward
AI, Decentralized AI, and AI Agents are the hot narratives in crypto right now. And you see many projects trying to get their little piece of hype by showing how they are AI relevant. But Walrus’ storage solution is helping move decentralized AI forward.
Thanks to its use of Sui and the Move programming language, it is easier to store big pieces of unstructured data called blobs than it is on other solutions. And this includes AI’s large language models (LLMs). You can store them on Walrus, too.
Walrus’ partnership with Atoma works to keep big providers like OpenAI from using all of our data for free again, as they did with social media. Atoma provides a fully decentralized tech stack for AI and it includes Walrus for data storage.
Our integration with Sui brings privacy-first AI to life.
The alpha release includes a demo app, “Utopia,” offering private AI chat capabilities while maintaining user experiences comparable to centralized alternatives.

Another unintended benefit of decentralized AI is more privacy. Atoma’s first product Utopia has private AI Chat abilities to go with its other great features.
These are just a couple of the many new things Walrus Protocol has been up to. All this before mainnet and the full launch of the $WAL token. You can track what Walrus is up to on their socials and in their main Discord channel.
