Bitcoin Rebounds Above $83,000 as KOSPI Slides 5.5%

Bitcoin fell under $81,000 then recovered above $83,000 while South Korea's KOSPI closed 5.5% lower. Liquidations topped $800 million and CPI lands Wednesday.

Bitcoin fell to just under $81,000 at 00:50 UTC on Tuesday and traded back above $83,000 later in the session, while South Korea's KOSPI closed 5.5% lower after breaking below 6,000 in midday trading. Ether and XRP both turned higher from early lows on the same day, which is the basis of the decoupling claim now doing the rounds: Korean equities broke, crypto did not.

Two things are worth separating before that claim gets repeated. The intraday reversal is real and shows up on more than one price board. Whether bitcoin has stopped tracking Korean stocks is a one-session observation, and the numbers over the week behind it point the other way.

The Session, Priced

CoinGlass's liquidation board, read during Tuesday's session, showed bitcoin at $83,235.40, up 1.04% over 24 hours, ether at $2,511.48, up 0.02%, and XRP at $1.3754, up 1.23%. Bitcoin's overnight range ran from $80,963 to $84,061.

Against that, the KOSPI's extremes were worse than its close. The index broke below 6,000 intraday, was down more than 7% at its low, and finished 5.5% lower, its lowest level since late July. The slide triggered a sell-side trading curb on the Korea Exchange for the first time in nearly two months. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each lost roughly 8%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.4% and Nasdaq futures fell 0.6%, extending Monday's 0.78% decline.

The week behind the day is weaker than the day itself. Bitcoin was still down about 3.5% over the previous seven days and ether about 7.6%, with total crypto market capitalization at about $2.8 trillion, bitcoin at 60% dominance and ether at 11%.

Liquidations Showed Deleveraging, Not Fresh Money

CoinGlass's page, read during the same session, showed $697.99 million of liquidations across 148,637 traders, with 79.9% of the 24-hour total on the long side. Liquidation totals move with the clock, and other trackers ran higher, with one putting the day's figure near $813 million and the long share at 86%. Read the range, not any single print.

Nearly three-quarters of the day's losses, about $595 million, landed in the previous 12 hours, as the KOSPI fell more than 6% and bitcoin slid to just under $81,000. The largest single wipeout was a $9.65 million bitcoin long on Binance, closed at about $81,700, with Binance accounting for half of all liquidations.

The last four hours flipped it: $74 million liquidated, $59 million of that, or 79%, from shorts, as bitcoin climbed back above $83,000.

Open interest told the same story. Crypto futures open interest, the dollar value of all outstanding contracts, stood at $143.4 billion, down 1.58%, while 24-hour futures volume ran at $212 billion, up 66% from $126 billion. Volume up with open interest down means contracts were closed, not added, and leverage kept draining from bitcoin, ether, XRP, SOL and HYPE futures, where open interest fell 2% or more on flat to negative prices.

The chip trade showed up in crypto derivatives too. Open interest in SK Hynix contracts rose 18% as the price fell 8%. SanDisk perpetual futures saw $19.5 million of liquidations, just above HYPE's $19 million and XRP's $18.78 million, and SOXL, a triple-leveraged US semiconductor ETF, saw $7.21 million liquidated.

Spot ETF flows went the other way as well. US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $65 million of net outflows on Monday against $21 million of net inflows on Friday, with the whole outflow from IBIT. US spot ether ETFs saw net outflows rise to $85 million from $56 million on Friday, with ETHA alone at $75 million.

What the Korean Drop Was About

Chipmakers led it, and the selling was foreign. Overseas investors accelerated sales of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, and the two memory makers each closed roughly 8% lower, a fifth straight losing session.

The trigger was reported to be comments from Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan likening speculative AI investing to gambling in a casino, and advances by Chinese memory-chip producer CXMT. The weakness carried into US premarket trading, where Micron and SanDisk were each down around 3%.

Energy and the dollar framed the day. WTI crude traded near $92.67, Brent hovered around $106 a barrel, and the Dollar Index held near 102.50, its highest since April last year.

What Would Break the Pattern

The decoupling read now rests on bitcoin holding $83,000. One trader posting as Daan Crypto Trades wrote on Tuesday that bitcoin "did make a higher low with a quick retrace back up overnight," and that $83,000 remains the key level on daily and weekly timeframes. A slide back below the overnight low, just under $81,000, would invalidate the session's read.

The scheduled test is Wednesday's US inflation print. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September CPI at 8:30 a.m. ET on 14 October. Headline annual inflation is forecast at 3.6%, up from 3.4%, with core at 2.5%, though those are analyst estimates ahead of the release, not BLS figures.

Positioning ahead of it looks cautious rather than bearish. Bitcoin and ether implied volatility indexes sat near year-to-date lows, and put options dominated the most-traded 24-hour rankings.

"With US inflation data approaching, I expect institutional investors to focus on adding protection through derivatives and hedging strategies rather than materially reducing their underlying exposure."

That is Paul Howard, senior director at market-making firm Wincent, speaking on Tuesday.

So the honest version of the decoupling story is one session long. Korean equities sold off on a chip-specific AI de-rating, crypto sold on the same headline, and bitcoin then found buyers at $81,000. Wednesday's CPI print is the next observable input, and the $81,000 to $83,000 band is what keeps Tuesday's read intact.
