Canada Sent $2.36 Billion in Small Crypto Transfers Home in a Year

Crypto transfers from Canada to India, China and the Philippines reached $2.36 billion in the year to June 2026, up 141%, as stablecoins take a bigger share.

Remittance-sized crypto transfers from Canada to India, China and the Philippines reached $2.36 billion in the year to June 2026, up 141% year over year, per Chainalysis's North America report.

The money moved in small pieces: 3.56 million transactions, an average of 75,100 unique senders a month, and an average transfer size of $663. Those are not trading positions. That is the shape of a monthly transfer home.

Stablecoins Now Carry a Fifth of Canada's Cross-Border Value

The three countries together account for 19.4% of Canada's outbound cross-border stablecoin value, up from 10.9% a year earlier. Stablecoins also took 44% of Canadian dollar-based order book volume by June 2026, up from 30%, with USDC dominant and very little activity flowing to Canadian dollar-backed stablecoins.

Cost explains part of the pull. The World Bank puts the average cost of sending money from Canada near 6.7%, with banks above 7%. Low blockchain settlement fees do not cover currency conversion or cashing out, so the saving is real but smaller than a fee-to-fee comparison suggests.

The Philippines Corridor, and Why the Two Numbers Differ

Chainalysis head of research Eric Jardine said the Canada-to-Philippines corridor reached about $61 million across 73,564 transactions, up 28% in value and 34.7% in transaction count. Two accounts of that total differ by $20,000, at $61.02 million and $61.04 million, on the same 73,564 transactions. Chainalysis's public post does not break out the Philippines figure, so treat the corridor number as reported rather than published.

Why Canada's Numbers Are So Large

Canada had the most robust peer-to-peer crypto economy of any G7 nation in Chainalysis's 2026 rankings, placing seventh globally in both domestic and cross-border flows and first worldwide for cross-border flows on the unweighted big money index. Its crypto economy grew 2.3% between July 2025 and June 2026 to reach $247.7 billion.

Crypto enthusiasm alone does not explain that. Global remittances were about $905 billion in 2024, and Canada's top destinations lead the recipient table:

  • India: about $129 billion
  • China: about $48 billion
  • The Philippines: about $40 billion

Canadians sent an estimated $8.3 billion abroad in 2023, much of it to those same three countries. About 23% of Canada's population is foreign-born, the highest share in the G7, according to Canadian Web3 Council executive director Morva Rohani, who said in the report that corridors to India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan and China are heavily used.

Chainalysis also found Canada's domestic peer-to-peer volume tracking the size of its temporary visa-holder population since mid-2021, rising and falling in parallel. The report calls that relationship associational, not causal.

The Stablecoin Act and the Case for a Canadian Dollar Coin

Canada's Stablecoin Act received Royal Assent in March 2026, and implementing regulations are now being drafted, which Rohani says will clear the way for issuers to launch Canadian dollar stablecoins.

The gap it would fill is easy to see. Canada's most in-demand cryptocurrency is essentially a USD-denominated stablecoin, a foreign asset, which Rohani says creates demand for U.S. government debt at the expense of Canadian government debt. Globally, cross-border stablecoin flows rose 77.5% to $220.3 billion in the year through June, per previous Chainalysis research, so Canada's slice is growing inside a market that is itself growing.

What the Data Leaves Out

The analysis covers Bitcoin and stablecoins above $10,000 to and from personal wallets. That threshold is deliberate: Jardine said the firm does not limit its analysis to the smallest transfers, to avoid "omitting real remittance value." The reporting period also gets described two ways, with Chainalysis's own post dating it to 1 July 2026 while coverage of the figures calls it the 12 months ending June 2026. A few days at the edge of a year rarely change a 141% move, but the boundaries are not identical.

The next thing to watch is the Stablecoin Act's implementing regulations. They decide whether a Canadian dollar stablecoin actually reaches users, or whether the country keeps sending value home in someone else's currency.
