Ethereum Researcher Justin Urges 'Bunker Mode' Over Private Key Risk

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake wants holders to move funds to fresh addresses before AI can crack ECDSA keys. Here is what bunker mode means.

Justin Drake wants you to move your coins. The Ethereum Foundation researcher posted on X on October 7, 2026, at about 14:14 UTC, calling on the blockchain industry to start planning what he calls bunker mode: a controlled migration of assets to brand-new addresses before AI gets good enough to work out private keys from public ones.

Nothing is broken today. Nobody has announced that ECDSA, the signature scheme behind Bitcoin, Ethereum and most other chains, has failed. Drake framed this as a potential crisis, and his argument is that preparing for it now is cheap while reacting later is not.

What Bunker Mode Asks You to Do

Start with how signatures work. A public key is revealed once an address signs a transaction. An address that has never signed anything keeps its public key hidden.

So the plan is simple to describe. Move the bulk of your funds to addresses that have never signed, and use addresses that do sign only for what you actually need to spend. Drake said the step requires no new cryptography and no new wallets.

Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for "bunker mode". My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses, i.e. addresses whose pubkeys remain hidden behind a hash.

He wants it done in a specific order. Large and sophisticated holders go first, and the process should be calm rather than a stampede. He stressed there is no need to rush, and said a poorly organized migration would do more harm than good. He also warned against panic.

If his scenario ever plays out, the coins most at risk are those in addresses that have already revealed their public keys. Reusing addresses or keeping funds in long-active wallets carries more exposure than using fresh ones. Wallets holding under roughly 50 BTC have partial cover, from what Drake called Satoshi's shield.

For signers whose keys secure large value or critical infrastructure, he recommends frequent key rotation and hash-based multi-signing schemes such as SPHINCS. On the Bitcoin side, he pointed to Project11's risq list as a tool for tracking exposed BTC public keys.

Why AI Comes Before Quantum

Drake's concern is that AI may beat quantum machines to the punch. He cited an OpenAI demonstration of mathematical ability that included a disproof of the Erdős unit distance conjecture, and pointed to results that overturned long-held hypotheses, including the n log(n) bound for integer multiplication and the 3SUM conjecture.

His read is that AI-powered mathematical reasoning could produce a fast breakdown of ECDSA in "months not years", ahead of quantum day. By break, he meant fast private-key recovery, for example within one week on available hardware such as a large GPU cluster.

He also said cryptographic breakthroughs looked underrepresented among 722 mathematical results published by OpenAI, and cited instances of government censorship of academic quantum cryptanalysis. That censorship claim is his, and has not been independently checked.

One more thread: he noted the possibility of a classical counterpart to Shor's algorithm, which would affect both elliptic curves and RSA.

How Seriously Anyone Is Taking It

The market shrugged. There was no immediate reaction to the warning, and traders and exchanges showed little visible concern.

What other Ethereum researchers, client teams or developers make of the idea is not something the pages checked here establish. The only measured response was the one from prices and venues, and it was indifference.

That gap is worth holding onto. A research post proves what that researcher thinks, not that the risk has arrived, and not that the industry is about to act on it.

The Timelines Drake Wants Accelerated

Exiting bunker mode safely will require post-AI cryptography. Drake's preference is hash-based cryptography, which avoids structured mathematical assumptions from curves, lattices or isogenies.

The strawmap roadmap already embraces hash-based cryptography with end-to-end formal verification as a response to the quantum threat. Drake said those timelines must now be revisited and accelerated in light of mathematical superintelligence.

The site lists "post quantum L1: centuries-long cryptographic security, via hash-based schemes" as a north star. It describes itself as a portmanteau of strawman and roadmap, and is explicit that it is a work in progress rather than an official Ethereum roadmap. It envisions roughly seven forks at a cadence of one upgrade every six months, which Drake described as a coordination tool rather than a prediction.

The unresolved bits are practical. Hash-based schemes like SPHINCS come with their own tradeoffs, and getting millions of users to move funds is a coordination problem crypto has rarely solved quickly.

Drake plans to address institutions in London next month in a live question-and-answer session. That is the next point where the argument meets the people who hold the keys.
