Circle's Arc gets its first Tokenized Gold asset in Matrixdock's XAUm

Circle's Arc adds Matrixdock's XAUm as its first tokenized gold. Each token backs one ounce held by Brink's or Malca-Amit, traceable to a numbered bar.

Circle's Arc blockchain has its first tokenized gold asset: Matrixdock's XAUm. Each token represents one ounce of gold held by Brink's or Malca-Amit and traceable to a numbered bar, the kind of custody detail that matters when the wrapper is the product.

What changes for you: if you already hold XAUm, the token now moves on Arc alongside its seven other networks. If you sit on Arc with USDC, you can buy and sell gold there for the first time. What you cannot do yet is borrow against it. Matrixdock says lending will come later. Today the gold can be sold on Arc. It cannot be borrowed against.

The trust layer behind XAUm

Matrixdock publishes the reserve reports. It also pays the auditor who checks them. That arrangement is the same kind of self-selected, self-funded audit any tokenized commodity issuer has to ask its holders to take on faith. Eva Meng, head of Matrixdock, framed the launch in a statement: "Gold has been an institutional reserve asset for centuries, but holding it and using it have always been two different things."

How a token becomes a bar of gold

The default path is not fast. Matrixdock's documentation still tells sellers to wait three working days for their money. A same-day cashout exists but it covers eligible sales only, requires transaction proof, and runs on New York hours, while the vaults sit twelve hours ahead in Singapore or Hong Kong. The asymmetry is real.

In April 2025, a customer walked into a Singapore vault and walked out with a kilogram of gold. Matrixdock had turned a token back into metal. It took three days. To do the same today, a holder needs 32.148 XAUm, redeemable for collection in Singapore or Hong Kong.

By comparison, Paxos requires 430 PAXG for a London Good Delivery bar and the customer arranges delivery. The price gap to actual metal is wide. $139,000 buys a collectable kilogram from XAUm, while PAXG demands roughly $1.8 million before Paxos will release a bar. London, the biggest gold market, settles two days after a trade.

Where XAUm sits in the gold-token market

XAUm runs on more networks than either rival. It lists eight, including Arc. Tether Gold runs on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain. PAX Gold added Solana in June and otherwise stays on Ethereum.

The size is not. On May 1, XAUm was worth about $70 million. Tether Gold was worth $2.52 billion and PAX Gold $2.32 billion. XAUm's market price sat near $4,318, about $71 million in total. Two orders of magnitude separate XAUm from the two biggest tokenized gold products, and Arc is unlikely to close that gap on its own.

Arc's actual first day

Circle launched the network on September 16 with Visa, BlackRock and Standard Chartered helping run it. The welcome mat, on opening day, was mostly used by another kind of asset. Sites for minting joke tokens took 82% of the $410.8 million traded on Arc's opening day, according to BeInCrypto's tally. That tells a reader two things: the infrastructure is live and liquid enough for a tokenized gold issuer to show up, and the other 18% was not institutions testing a tokenized reserve. It was memecoin flow.

The details still to come

The source material does not pin down when exactly XAUm arrived on Arc, only that it had by publication. It does not say whether XAUm is the first of several gold tokens Circle intends to bring to Arc, or whether USDC will play a specific role in settling Arc-based gold trades beyond the broader positioning Circle has described for the network. Visa, BlackRock and Standard Chartered are described as helping run Arc; their specific roles (validator, node operator, advisor) are not stated. Current on-chain XAUm reserves and bar serial numbers are not in the public material reviewed for this piece.
