Crypto Market Cap Adds $840B in Q3 as Spot Volume Falls 14%

CoinGecko's Q3 2026 report shows crypto market cap up $840.1 billion to $2.96 trillion, while top-10 spot exchange volume fell 14.2% to $1.65 trillion.

Crypto's total market cap rose 39.6% in the third quarter of 2026, adding $840.1 billion, CoinGecko's Q3 industry report shows. The same dataset records $1.65 trillion of turnover on the top 10 spot centralized exchanges for the quarter, down 14.2% from $1.93 trillion in Q2.

Market cap ended September at $2.96 trillion, after peaking at $3.0 trillion on September 21. The gain snapped three consecutive quarters of decline and was the strongest quarterly advance since the fourth quarter of 2024.

That is the quarter's central divergence: an $840.1 billion recovery in value, against thinner spot turnover and a third straight quarterly fall in average daily volume.

August Delivered More Than Half the Quarter

The recovery was concentrated in one month. Market cap rose 21.8%, or $489.8 billion, in August alone, more than half the quarter's gain, and the report ties the acceleration to the US Treasury's statement that it would at least double planned buybacks of long-dated government bonds.

Momentum then held through a political setback. The CLARITY Act failed a key Senate procedural vote on September 15, and market cap still reached its quarterly high six days later, on September 21.

Spot Volume Falls as Binance Takes a Bigger Share

Monthly spot volume bottomed at $443.6 billion in July before rebounding to $712.3 billion in August. Across all venues, average daily volume fell 8.6% quarter on quarter to $73.3 billion, a third consecutive quarterly decline, though activity built through the period: September averaged $94.8 billion a day against $57.7 billion in July.

Binance's spot market share rose to 42.7% from 38.7% in Q2, making it the only exchange with a double-digit share as the rest of the top 10 ceded ground. Binance gaining share of a shrinking spot pool is a pattern we have seen in XRP markets too, where spot volume fell $1.9 billion over eight weeks, led by the same venue.

September was positive for every top-10 exchange, with Upbit up 83.9% in the month, even as it posted the quarter's steepest fall at 33.7%. Bitget dropped out of the top 10 to 11th. Its spot volume ran $15.7 billion in July and $18.7 billion in August, against $37.8 billion in June, before a hack in September.

Perp Open Interest Closes Above $100B

Open interest on the top 10 perpetual centralized exchanges rose 40.6% in Q3 and closed above $100 billion, the first time since the third quarter of 2025. The report puts the prior stretches at that level between May 10 and November 11, 2025, and before that between November 22, 2024 and February 4, 2025.

Growth was broad, though not universal. Binance, Bybit, MEXC, Gate, Bitget and Kraken each grew open interest more than 40% quarter on quarter, with Binance adding $12.7 billion in absolute terms. KuCoin and Deribit moved the other way, down 41.2% and 18.9% respectively.

Ethereum Leads the Majors; HYPE Rallies on a US Signal

Ethereum climbed 71.0% to $2,684, ahead of Bitcoin and every other major asset, helped by $3.1 billion of net inflows into US spot ETH ETFs. Its average daily trading volume fell anyway, down 23.2% to $11.5 billion from $15.0 billion in Q2.

HYPE gained 40.5% over four days to $82 after President Trump said on August 19 that CFTC chairman Michael Selig is working to bring Hyperliquid to the US market. It went on to set an all-time high of $98 on September 23. HYPE's average daily volume rose 35.2% to $0.85 billion from $0.63 billion in Q2.

Robinhood Chain, which launched publicly on July 1, processed more than $88.9 billion in volume in Q3 and averaged 9.5 million transactions a day, making it the third most active chain. Daily volume on its native DEXes grew from $1.3 million on July 1 to a peak of $3.5 billion on September 4, driven by the Cashcat memecoin and launchpads such as Pons. A one-day spike to 26.9 million transactions on August 12 came from the Spritehood NFT mint and a wave of memecoin launches; the daily average stayed near 9.5 million as most new tokens failed to gain traction.

A Testnet Delay and a Year-to-Date Gap

The Glamsterdam upgrade did not reach Ethereum mainnet in Q3, after already slipping in Q2, and remains in testnet rollout with Sepolia activation on October 6.

One number to hold against the $840.1 billion headline: total market cap is still down 4.0% year to date.
