Bitcoin Fades From $84,000 Ahead of the September CPI Print

Bitcoin touched $84,000 early Wednesday and slipped back to $83,200 as a chip-led risk-off trade and the September CPI print kept buyers on hold.

Bitcoin made a run at $84,000 early Wednesday and could not hold it. The price touched the level, faded within the hour and settled near $83,200, down 0.5% on the day, with the September U.S. inflation report still hours away at 8:30 a.m. ET.

It is the last CPI print before the Federal Reserve's October 27-28 policy meeting, and that is why the market looks quiet rather than decisive.

Bitcoin Is Still Boxed Between $81,000 and $84,000

The ceiling is not new. Buyers defended the 50-day moving average near $81,000 on Tuesday, when Bitcoin bottomed close to that level, but they have not managed to push through $84,000 since. A daily close above $84,000 would be the first sign that buyers have broken out of the range. Above that, the next major resistance sits between $86,000 and $87,000.

Zoom out and it is still a drawdown. Bitcoin trades about 33.6% below its record high of near $126,000, set in October 2025, and 4.7% below its 2026 open of $87,722.

Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, points at the equity market rather than at crypto. Bitcoin trades close to the Nasdaq 100 in how institutions rank risk, he said, and the index's caution "is preventing Bitcoin from spreading its wings."

A Chip-Led Selloff in Korea Set Tuesday's Tone

South Korea's KOSPI closed down 5.46% at 6,035.35 on Tuesday after triggering a sell-sidecar, with Samsung Electronics down about 7.39% and SK Hynix off between 8% and 10%. The trigger was a weekend announcement from Chinese DRAM maker ChangXin Memory Technologies about progress on a 4F² memory-cell design, with plans to ship a server memory product on it by the end of 2026.

That chip-led selling was already in evidence on Tuesday, when Korea's Kospi sank 5.5% and Bitcoin held near $83,000.

The flush carried into crypto overnight. Ether led individual assets with $115.19 million in liquidations, followed by Bitcoin at $106.61 million, and ether, BNB and Solana all fell between 4% and 6% at the lows.

By Wednesday the chip trade had steadied. Samsung and SK Hynix both closed up in Asia, ASML shares rose 3% after an upbeat outlook, and Europe's STOXX 600 was up 0.4%. Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed early on, though an ETF tracking chipmakers still pointed to selling.

ASML's numbers explain the optimism: third-quarter 2026 net sales of 11.66 billion euros and net profit of 4.96 billion euros, against consensus estimates of 11.72 billion euros and 4.1 billion euros. CEO Christophe Fouquet said supply planned for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand, that some customers are discussing orders for 2029 and even 2030, and that the company is investigating ways to lift 2028 capacity beyond the 30% increase it had forecast. ASML raised the lower end of its 2026 sales forecast to 44 billion euros, from 43 billion, and guided to fourth-quarter net sales of 14.2 billion to 15.2 billion euros.

What the CPI Print Has to Clear

The forecasts point in two directions at once, and that is the point. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect September headline CPI to rise 0.6% on the month and 3.6% year over year, an acceleration driven by energy prices. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, is expected to rise just 0.2% on the month and 2.5% year over year.

Oil is the reason for the gap. Brent crude climbed more than 14% in September, taking its third-quarter gain to about 42%. It traded around $105 a barrel on Tuesday and was up nearly 1% at $106.5 on Wednesday, near a two-week high, after attacks on two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, warned the headline risk runs to the upside: "We've got real upside risk on the September CPI. Typically, when we have these moves in inflation, everyone's models undershoot the actual outcome."

The rates backdrop is already tight. After its first rate increase in three years last month, the Fed signaled it will likely hike again. Fed funds futures traders expect the next move in December, and money markets put a roughly 20% chance on a hike late this month and a near-100% chance in December. New York Fed President John Williams said one more increase may be needed this year but saw no need for hikes in 2027, while Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack argued on October 12 that a restrictive stance is needed for a timely return to 2%.

The 10-year Treasury yield has held near 5.2%, just below the roughly 5.31% multi-decade high reached earlier in October, and 30-year yields fell 2 basis points to 5.58% on Wednesday, a fourth daily decline. The dollar index was flat at 102.17, close to its highest since April 2025.

ETF Outflows and the Altcoin Board

Flows are not helping. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded a $65.4 million net outflow on Monday, October 12, all of it from BlackRock's IBIT. That pushed October into a $454 million net outflow, against a $321 million surplus earlier in the month. The week ending October 9 was worse: $678.9 million left the funds, the heaviest weekly withdrawal since June. Total net assets across the funds stood at $106.06 billion, down from $110.77 billion on October 5.

Strategy disclosed in an 8-K filed October 12 that it bought 250 BTC in the October 5 to 11 window and repurchased $192 million of its STRC preferred stock, funded by selling 125,183 MSTR shares for $21.0 million in net proceeds.

Among the majors on Wednesday, ZEC and TRX were the only gainers, up about 1% each. HYPE was the laggard, down 2% to about $81. Solana fell 1.4% and ether slipped 1% to just under $2,500.

The next few hours are simple to describe. A cooler core reading keeps the range intact and gives buyers another shot at $84,000. A hot headline number, on top of a 10-year yield near 5.2% and a dollar close to an 18-month high, makes the $81,000 floor the level to watch.
