Standard Chartered Opens Bitcoin, Ether Trading to Wealthy UAE Clients

Standard Chartered has opened direct bitcoin and ether trading to professional investors in the UAE, with custody and settlement handled inside the bank.

Standard Chartered now lets affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates buy and sell bitcoin and ether through their existing bank accounts, with the bank holding the coins and settling the trades itself.

The service is open to clients classed as professional investors, and the bank says it is the first of its kind from an international bank in the UAE. Standard Chartered also calls it a global first: the first time it has offered crypto trading directly to wealthy clients in any market. It went live on 14 October.

The Bank Keeps Custody and Settlement In-House

Custody and settlement stay inside Standard Chartered's own ecosystem. That closed-loop design is the part worth understanding before you tap buy, because it decides what you can do with the coins afterwards.

There is no separate crypto wallet and no third-party trading platform to sign into. You trade through the bank, the balance updates, and clients keep ownership of the assets, which a Standard Chartered group company safeguards.

The loop also runs one way. Crypto cannot be transferred into the service or out of it. Ownership changes hands the moment you buy, and the bank sources the coins from a counterparty before its business day ends. If you already hold bitcoin in a wallet somewhere else, this is not a route to move it under the bank's roof.

The build came out of the bank's wealth and retail business working with its corporate and investment banking arm, and it operates through Zodia Markets, backed by SC Ventures. Standard Chartered Bank in the UAE is the contracting entity. Its broker-dealer licence from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority is listed as active and issued on 24 August, covering Dubai outside the DIFC.

What It Costs and Who Qualifies

Clients pay through the price rather than a fee line. Quoted prices include a spread of up to 2%, with no separate transaction or custody fees on top. The service's key facts statement puts the smallest order at $50 and the largest at $50,000, or the dirham equivalent.

Eligibility is narrow. You need UAE residency, to be over 21, an eligible dollar or dirham account, a risk profile rating above 5, and a banking relationship of at least AED 4 million. Professional investor status carries thresholds for investment knowledge and liquid net worth as well.

One limit matters more than the rest: the coins are not a deposit and carry no deposit protection, even though they sit inside a bank.

How This Differs From Standard Chartered's Other Crypto Work

Standard Chartered already runs several crypto businesses that look alike on a brochure and work differently.

  • Institutional spot trading. The bank began deliverable bitcoin and ether spot trading through its UK arm in July 2025, the first global systemically important bank to do it there, and extended the offering to the UAE on 3 September 2026. Institutional clients could choose their own custodian for settlement.
  • Stablecoin custody in Dubai. Its Dubai branch began holding RLUSD for institutional clients, and plans to let that stablecoin work as collateral on LMAX Group, an institutional venue for foreign exchange and digital assets. That plan is not live and still needs documentation, testing, regulatory requirements and internal approvals. Ripple put $150 million into LMAX in January 2026 to embed RLUSD in its infrastructure.
  • Custody in Singapore. The bank plans to offer custody for selected cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets to institutional and accredited investor corporate clients. It has not named the assets or a start date, and the service sits inside its financing and securities-services business rather than selling to retail.
  • Zodia Custody. Standard Chartered founded the custodian with Northern Trust and agreed in May 2026 to buy the rest of it, folding those operations into its own securities services.

The wealth service is the end of that stack that faces individual clients, and the only one where the bank sells the coins to you rather than holding them for a fund or a company.

Standard Chartered says it plans to bring the trading service to other markets but has not given a timetable, and it has not said whether clients will get coins beyond bitcoin and ether.

The trade for a UAE holder is easy to see. You get a licensed bank you already use, custody inside it, and no wallet to manage. You give up the ability to move the coins, accept an order ceiling, and pay a spread of up to 2% on every buy and sell.
