RLUSD Custody Goes Live at Standard Chartered After $765M Q3 Jump

RLUSD custody is live at Standard Chartered's Dubai branch after the stablecoin added $765.3 million in Q3. The LMAX collateral link is still planned.

Standard Chartered's Dubai branch now custodies RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin, as issued on the XRP Ledger. The service went live on 12 October 2026, run through the bank's DIFC Branch under Dubai Financial Services Authority rules.

It arrives after a fast quarter for the token. RLUSD's market capitalization grew by $765.3 million over the 90 days of the third quarter, RWA Foundation data shows. Only Circle added more, at $915 million, with United Stables third at $474.2 million.

If you hold XRP, the distinction is the story: the bank is custodying a stablecoin that happens to sit on the XRP Ledger, not the network's own token.

What Standard Chartered Is Actually Custodying

Ripple's press release for the launch is dated 12 October 2026 in Singapore. It covers institutional custody of RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger, and nothing else the ledger produces.

RLUSD is not a single-chain asset. Ripple says it runs across seven networks: XRP Ledger, Ethereum, Base, Optimism, Ink, Unichain and the XRPL EVM sidechain. RWA.xyz puts the stablecoin's total value at $2,370,965,455 as of 13 October 2026, with about $1.3 billion on Ethereum and about $1.1 billion on the XRP Ledger.

DeFiLlama shows the same split: 1.313 billion RLUSD circulating on Ethereum and 1.114 billion on the XRP Ledger. Over the past week, the Ethereum supply rose 2.98% while the XRP Ledger supply fell 8.77%. Most of the supply sits off the chain this custody service names, and in the latest week that gap widened.

Ripple describes the token as backed 1:1 by cash, U.S. Treasuries and government money market funds, verified monthly by an independent accounting firm, and issued with approval from the New York Department of Financial Services and the DFSA.

The development also adds to activity around the XRP Ledger. In a separate use case, XRPL's x402 payments passed 10 million tracked transactions, highlighting growing experimentation with software-driven payments. That milestone does not, by itself, establish demand for RLUSD.

The LMAX Collateral Link Is Still Planned

The same release describes a second arrangement that is not live. Standard Chartered says it is working with Ripple and LMAX Group to make RLUSD eligible collateral and to extend its collateral mirroring model to LMAX, for agreed LMAX products. Mirroring means the value of eligible collateral is reflected to LMAX without the underlying RLUSD being transferred to the trading venue.

Luke Dorney, head of custody for digital assets at LMAX Group, said RLUSD is "an increasingly important component of institutional digital asset markets" and that the model gives clients flexibility across its cross-asset marketplace.

Read the conditions attached to it, though. The release states the planned capabilities remain subject to final documentation, successful testing, applicable laws and regulations, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness. As written, it is an intention, not a finished product. No date has been announced for the collateral integration to start working.

The relationship predates this week. LMAX's own release from 15 January 2026 says Ripple provided $150 million in financing as part of a multi-year partnership to integrate RLUSD as a core collateral asset. The same release notes LMAX's $8.2 trillion in institutional exchange volumes in 2025 and quotes Ripple's stablecoin head, Jack McDonald, describing RLUSD as "already a top 5 USD-backed stablecoin."

TrustLinq Opens Bank Payouts for Ethereum RLUSD

A separate announcement on 13 October shows RLUSD picking up uses away from the XRP Ledger. TrustLinq, a Swiss financial intermediary supervised for anti-money-laundering through SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation recognised by FINMA, said clients holding RLUSD (ERC-20) can now pay any third-party bank account in more than 190 countries and over 80 currencies, straight from self-custodial holdings.

What changes, and for whom: the option is available immediately to all verified TrustLinq clients, with no integration required. Payments can also be funded from USDT (ERC-20 and TRC-20), USDC and EURC. The expansion builds on an existing deal in which Ripple Payments settlement infrastructure powers TrustLinq's fiat payouts.

"Stablecoin holders have never lacked ways to trade; they have lacked ways to pay," said Lili Metodieva, co-founder of TrustLinq.

Note which version this is. The payout route supports the Ethereum token, not the RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger that Standard Chartered now custodies.

Why RLUSD Growth Does Not Settle the XRP Question

Ripple's own stablecoin page answers this directly: RLUSD is not XRP. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, priced by the open market. RLUSD is a regulated dollar stablecoin. A global bank custodying dollar tokens on the ledger says something about how the ledger gets used for settlement. It does not say XRP is being bought.

The Q3 growth works the same way. A $765.3 million rise in RLUSD's market cap means more dollar tokens in circulation, and more than half of the current supply sits on Ethereum.

Standard Chartered is widening its custody reach either way. Earlier in October it said it plans to offer institutional custody in Singapore for selected cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets, without naming the assets or a start date.

The bank has not disclosed how much RLUSD it holds in custody or which institutional clients are participating, so the size of this custody book stays unknown for now.

What to watch is concrete: whether the collateral work clears the conditions listed in the release. If it does, funds could post RLUSD as margin at LMAX while the stablecoin stays in a bank account, which is a real change for the desks that trade there. If it does not, the live part of the announcement is custody of a stablecoin whose supply mostly sits on other chains.
