Bitcoin Holds Near $83K as Korea's Kospi Sinks 5.5% on Chip Fears

Bitcoin ended a rough Asian session roughly flat as Korea's Kospi fell 5.5%. Liquidations, ETF flows and Strategy's buying show where the strain sits.

Bitcoin had a calmer Tuesday than South Korea's stock market did. CoinGlass's market page showed Bitcoin at $83,465.10, down just 0.05% over 24 hours. That flat number hides a bumpy night. Bitcoin fell 2.8% to about $81,382 by 9:20 p.m. ET on Monday, then climbed back by roughly $2,000.

Asia's chip stocks had no such recovery. Korea's Kospi fell more than 7% at its worst, slipping below 6,000, and closed 5.5% lower at 6,035.35. So it's fair to ask two things: how a chip sell-off in Seoul reached Bitcoin at all, and why it didn't stick.

Samsung and SK Hynix Led Korea's Slide

Samsung Electronics fell 7.4% and SK Hynix dropped 10.1% as foreign investors stepped up their selling of both memory makers. The selling was tied to fresh fears about Chinese competition in memory chips and renewed doubts about the AI boom that has carried chip stocks.

It got heavy enough to trip a sell-side trading curb, known in Korea as a sidecar, after KOSPI 200 futures fell more than 5%. That was the first time the curb had fired in about two months. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell around 2%, and Taiwan's market slid as well.

The Bill Landed on Leveraged Longs

The clearest record of what the turbulence cost crypto traders is liquidations: leveraged positions closed by force when they lose too much. CoinGlass showed $810.40 million liquidated over 24 hours, across 169,437 traders. Longs, which are bets on rising prices, made up 84.4% of it.

Bitcoin accounted for $192.16 million of that total, 73.8% of it longs. Ether was close behind at $180.52 million, with 80.4% longs. These are rolling 24-hour figures, so they shift through the day. Monday's earlier drop below $82,000 had already set off a wave of long liquidations.

For scale, CoinGlass lists its largest liquidation day as October 10, 2025, at $19.16 billion, tied to a US tariff hike on China. Tuesday's total is about 4% of that. Painful for the people caught in it, but a long way from a market-wide wipeout.

Altcoins took more of the strain on CoinGlass's 24-hour figures:

  • Ether at $2,505.95, down 1.94%
  • Solana at $106.71, down 4.33%
  • XRP at $1.3634, down 2.73%
  • NEAR at $5.135, down 11.17%

Why Asian Stocks and Bitcoin Moved Together

Nobody has shown a direct pipe from Korean chip shares into Bitcoin. What analysts describe is a shared mood. Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, blamed Monday's slide on macro pressure, softer institutional demand and caution ahead of the US inflation report. He pointed to elevated Treasury yields and a stronger dollar weighing on risk assets. Oil is also still above $100 a barrel.

That "softer institutional demand" shows up in the ETF tables. Farside's data shows US spot Bitcoin ETFs took a net outflow of $65.4 million on October 12, all of it from BlackRock's IBIT. That followed outflows of $484.9 million on October 7 and $244.1 million on October 8. There were green days too: $118.8 million in on October 6 and $21.1 million on October 9. The most recent day, though, was red.

You may also see claims that Bitcoin balances on exchanges keep shrinking, which would hint at holders moving coins off trading venues. We couldn't check that against its underlying data, so treat it as unconfirmed for now.

Strategy's Bigger Cheque Went to Its Own Shares

There's a small, telling detail in Strategy's latest update. The company bought 250 BTC between October 5 and October 11 for $21.5 million, at an average of $86,194 each, fees included. That's above where Bitcoin traded on Tuesday.

In the same week, Strategy spent $192.4 million repurchasing 1,932,145 of its STRC preferred shares. That's roughly nine times what went into bitcoin. For a company best known as a bitcoin buyer, last week's money mostly went into its own securities. It also reported a USD Reserve of $4.88 billion and USD Cash of $640.5 million as of October 11.

The Inflation Report Arrives Wednesday

The next test is close. The Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules the September Consumer Price Index for 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 14. That's the report analysts say traders were bracing for on Monday.

Tuesday showed Bitcoin can ride out a 5.5% Kospi fall without losing ground over the day. Monday showed that leveraged longs can't. Monday night's low near $81,382 is the nearest marker to watch once the inflation figure lands.
