Cross River Adds RLUSD as a Payment Rail on the XRP Ledger

Cross River will settle Ripple's RLUSD on the XRP Ledger through its core banking system, giving fintechs one API for ACH, wires and 24/7 treasury moves.

Cross River Bank has signed an agreement with Ripple to bring RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin, into its own core banking system, with transactions settling on the XRP Ledger. The two companies announced the deal on October 15.

The interesting part is not simply that a bank said yes to a stablecoin. It is where the stablecoin sits. RLUSD will be built into Cross River's Core Operating System, the software fintechs already use to move money, so a company can shift between US dollars and RLUSD without standing up a blockchain setup of its own.

Ripple's Markus Infanger, a senior vice president at RippleX, put the thinking plainly: stablecoins "won't transform payments through parallel financial systems. They'll do it by becoming part of the banking infrastructure businesses already use." That is a strategy in one line, and it is also the test of this deal. The warm version of the promise is a business that stops juggling providers. Adam Goller, Cross River's head of fintech banking, said as much: businesses "shouldn't have to rely on several different providers to move money across the globe."

What a Fintech Can Actually Do Through One API

According to Cross River, the platform will handle ACH transfers, wire payments and real-time settlement through a single API connection. International payments are in scope, and treasury transfers can move outside banking hours, so money does not have to wait for the next business day.

RLUSD becomes an additional payment rail alongside ACH and wires, and customers can reach it through the same kind of software connection they use for ordinary transfers, without deploying blockchain infrastructure. Cross River describes itself as the integration layer between regulated financial services and blockchain payment networks, giving issuers and acquirers room to settle intraday and cut settlement latency.

That is the promise. How many fintechs switch it on is the proof.

The Day-One Question Is Still Open

This is where the announcement gets fuzzy. The release says Cross River is "expanding on capabilities already in development," which sounds like work in progress. Its own headline says customers "can now access RLUSD through a single API connection," which sounds like it is ready. Whether the integration is live for fintech customers or still being built is not confirmed.

There is a second limit. Cross River says its services are currently available only in a limited set of US states, and no list of those states was published. For plenty of US businesses, the honest answer today is not yet.

The Numbers Ripple Is Quoting

Ripple says RLUSD has passed $2.5 billion in market capitalization, with more than $1 billion of that issued on the XRP Ledger. It also says the XRP Ledger has processed more than $1.3 trillion in value settled to date, and that transactions on it typically settle in three to five seconds at a fraction of a cent.

Two careful notes. Those are the companies' own figures, and the $2.5 billion market cap has not been checked against an independent market data source. Treat them as what Ripple says, not as numbers we verified.

RLUSD Keeps Turning Up Elsewhere

Cross River is the newest stop, not the only one. Standard Chartered has launched institutional custody for RLUSD on the XRP Ledger through its Dubai branch. Ripple also moved RLUSD into brokerage settlement through a deal with DriveWealth announced on October 14, and Stripe-owned Privy added XRP Ledger wallet tools for developers.

Laid end to end, the pattern is a stablecoin being pushed into places where money already moves: custody, brokerage, developer tools and now a core banking system. Ripple was founded in 2012 and says it holds more than 85 licenses across payments, custody, prime brokerage and treasury management, so it has the paperwork to keep doing this.

The thing to watch is smaller than the headline. Does Cross River name the states where it operates, and can a fintech actually turn RLUSD on through that single connection today, or is this a rail still being laid?
