DriveWealth Picks Ripple's RLUSD for Europe Settlement

DriveWealth is integrating Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin to settle money in Europe, with custody and payments to follow.

DriveWealth is putting Ripple's stablecoin rails under its brokerage business in Europe. The firm said on 14 October that it is integrating Ripple's stablecoin infrastructure to settle money in Europe using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, with plans to expand to the U.S. afterwards.

If you hold RLUSD, the relevance is the type of user rather than a new feature. DriveWealth does not sell accounts to the public. It supplies the brokerage infrastructure behind more than 100 fintechs, digital wallets and financial institutions that offer access to U.S. markets. Settlement is the part of that business where a stablecoin can do a job a bank wire does slowly, and where a token can pick up flow it would not otherwise see.

What RLUSD Settlement Replaces in the Europe Flows

The release points at one mismatch in the current plumbing. U.S. equities settle on a T+1 basis, while moving dollars across borders can take longer, which Ripple says "can trap capital, increase funding requirements". DriveWealth clients can fund and manage collateral accounts with stablecoins that convert to cash in near real time instead of waiting on a bank wire.

Naureen Hassan, DriveWealth's chief executive, framed it as a gap her own product created: "We've already enabled 24/5 trading; now we need the funding to match, so clients can move with the markets instead of waiting for them."

Jack McDonald, Ripple's SVP of Stablecoins, said DriveWealth came with a narrow brief and left with a wider one. "DriveWealth came to Ripple with a specific challenge around cross-border settlement, but it quickly became clear there was an opportunity to do much more together," he said.

Europe First, With the U.S. Behind It

The announcement covers four workstreams, and they are at different stages:

  • Stablecoin settlement in Europe, using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger alongside Ripple mint and burn capabilities, with the U.S. named as a later market.
  • Ripple Payments, to support cross-border acceptance from DriveWealth's global partners.
  • Digital asset custody in Europe, with plans to expand to additional markets over time.
  • Treasury and custody infrastructure on Ripple's rails, giving clients one real-time view of money held in dollars, stablecoins or crypto, and the ability to move between them.

Separately, DriveWealth and Ripple Prime are exploring equity financing through Ripple Prime's Delta One business, which covers U.S. equities and equity derivatives. Exploring is the word the release uses.

What the announcement does not give is a date for when RLUSD settlement goes live in Europe, which DriveWealth entity runs it, or how much European volume it covers. The release says DriveWealth "is integrating" the infrastructure. That is a plan. Nothing published supports reading it as a live service or a finished rollout.

The Wider RLUSD Push

Ripple is stacking up institutional arrangements around the token. Standard Chartered said on 13 October that institutional custody for RLUSD on the XRP Ledger is now live, available through its DIFC Branch in Dubai, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. The bank, Ripple and LMAX Group also intend to enable RLUSD as eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products, subject to final documentation, testing, applicable laws and regulations, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness. An intention, not a launch.

Ripple says its regulatory footprint spans more than 85 licences, and that it has spent more than a decade building blockchain tools for financial institutions. DriveWealth, for its part, is a registered broker-dealer and a member of FINRA and SIPC, and its affiliate UAB DriveWealth Europe is MiFID II licensed to trade securities and provide custody across the European Economic Area. The release does not tie the RLUSD settlement work to that European entity by name.

The next fixed point is a fireside chat at Ripple Swell in New York City on Wednesday 28 October, where the two companies will discuss the partnership. Until a settlement date appears, the question for anyone holding RLUSD or XRP is not whether the deal exists, it does, but when the Europe leg stops being an integration and starts being a rail.
