zkLend Shuts Down, Allocates $200K to User Recovery Fund

Most crypto users described the news as a disappointing route for the project.

In a difficult but decisive move, zkLend, a lending protocol built on Starknet, has officially announced its shutdown.

The decision comes after months of turbulence following an exploit on zkLend significantly damaged user trust. And more recently, the delisting of its native token, ZEND, from major exchanges like Bybit and KuCoin. These developments, the team says, left the project with limited options and liquidity.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce our decision to wind down zkLend,” the team said in a statement posted to X on June 25. “Over recent months, the exploit we suffered has deeply eroded user confidence… the removal of ZEND from major exchanges… significantly limits our capacity to effectively allocate toward any new initiatives.”

Rather than moving on with uncertainty, zkLend has dedicated its remaining treasury, about $200,000, towards a user recovery fund. The funds will go to support affected users, a move the team described as “a more responsible and meaningful use of resources.”

Focus Turns to Recovery and Open-Source Contribution

While the lending markets will not be relaunched, zkLend says it will keep certain community tools accessible. “The DeFi Spring, recovery, and kSTRK portal will remain live and accessible for users to unstake or to claim,” they confirmed.

The team also mentioned ongoing work with zeroShadow, a blockchain investigation firm, to track down and potentially recover lost funds from the exploit.

Perhaps one of the more constructive aspects of the shutdown is zkLend’s commitment to open-sourcing its code. “We’re open-sourcing our audited and refreshed codebase… The source code will be made available in the following few weeks,” the team said, inviting other developers to continue building on what they started.

Most crypto users described the news as a disappointing route for the project. Notably, others see it as a reminder of the growing danger most DeFi protocols face.

For others, zkLend’s decision to prioritize user recovery over a shaky restart is commendable, as other projects quietly disappear or pivot without addressing user losses.

In general, the statement reflects accountability, a value mainstream investors want to see in the crypto industry.
