NEXTPredict Paid $12,000 to Hedge Its Conference on Kalshi

NEXTPredict paid $12,000 for 3 million Kalshi contracts at $0.004 that pay $3 million if JFK cancels over half its flights on October 21.

NEXTPredict paid $12,000 in premium for 3 million YES contracts priced at $0.004 apiece on Kalshi's JFK flight cancellation market, a position that pays $3 million if more than half the flights scheduled to arrive at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport are cancelled on October 21, the main attendee travel day before its October 22-23 summit.

The trade was a block executed through Kalshi, with Susquehanna as market maker. NEXTPredict calls it the first-ever use of a prediction market to hedge an investment in a major conference, a claim that rests on the company's own statement and that no source in this report independently confirms.

A Block Trade of 3 Million Contracts at $0.004

Kalshi created the JFK template after self-certifying the contracts with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on July 14, 2026. The trade followed on or around July 27, roughly two weeks later.

The pricing moved during negotiation. NEXTPredict initially discussed committing approximately $10,000. Susquehanna quoted the trade at approximately 250-to-1, which produced the final $12,000 premium and the $3 million potential payout. Fortune put the opening odds at around 249-to-1, a one-point gap from the other sources that could not be reconciled.

Roles were split cleanly. Kalshi created the market and set the resolution rules. Susquehanna provided the quote and took the other side of the trade. NEXTPredict's Lindh said the company deposited the $12,000 premium into its institutional account and accepted the trade through the platform.

What the Contract Pays, and What It Does Not

The contract pays on flight cancellations, not on whether the conference itself suffers. NEXTPredict is betting that a mass grounding at JFK would hurt turnout, and the company is explicit that the two are not the same thing.

Lindh described the gap as basis risk: cancellations could stay below the 50% trigger and still damage attendance. A March New York event gives the scale. About 100 people could not attend, which represented roughly $100,000 in ticket sales and another $100,000 in sponsorship exposure, or about $200,000 against a $12,000 premium.

That is the shape of the trade. The hedge covers a tail event, not the ordinary friction that costs a conference money.

Why the Price Was Roughly 250-to-1

The trigger level sits well outside anything JFK has produced in October. Across all 14 October 21sts in OddsShopper's own analysis of Bureau of Transportation Statistics data, JFK cancelled five flights out of 8,085, a rate of 0.062%. In 14 consecutive Octobers the airport never once cancelled between a quarter and half its flights, sitting under a tenth or stopping entirely.

Those figures are OddsShopper's read and were not recomputed for this article. They are also the clearest statement of what would have to happen for the contract to pay: a shutdown severe enough that no October in the sample resembles it.

Institutional Only, With Manipulation Rules Attached

The contract was limited to institutional participants. Fortune reported it would be available only to Kalshi's roughly 1,000 institutional users. It is not written against individual flights, and Kalshi's terms carry explicit prohibitions on manipulation. The airport-wide design, rather than individual attendees' travel plans, is what reduces the risk of someone moving the outcome.

Kalshi's resolution terms also excluded certain potentially human-caused disruptions, such as bomb threats or drone interference. Fortune reported the platform is in talks with companies in freight and energy markets to create similar contracts tied to flight cancellations at specific airports.

The contract drew legal attention quickly. FlightAware sued Kalshi in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on August 10, and withdrew the case the following day.

Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour framed the trade as the intended use of the venue.

Prediction markets are most powerful when they give people and businesses a way to turn uncertainty into actionable decisions.

Susquehanna's Joe Grubb made the institutional case, saying prediction market mechanics had paved the way for the price discovery and market structure needed to transfer institutional risk that historically had no path for execution.

The Dates That Matter

The summit runs October 22-23, 2026 at Convene, Hudson Yards in New York City, two weeks before the 2026 US midterm elections, and is expected to draw around 2,500 attendees and more than 50 speakers, with Morgan Stanley among its strategic partners.

One detail is unresolved. The press release, TSNN, Crypto Briefing and OddsShopper all describe the measured day as October 21, the travel day. Fortune says the contract covers cancellations on October 22 and 23. The two cannot both be right, and the difference matters because the payout depends on which day gets counted.

NEXTPredict said it has no immediate plan to use the same structure for another event, so this may stay a single trade rather than a template. The measurable outcome arrives on the resolution date: either more than 50% of scheduled JFK arrivals are cancelled, or they are not.
