Ripple and Meritz Securities Explore Custody for Korea's Markets

Ripple and Meritz Securities will explore bringing Ripple Custody and tokenization to Korea's capital markets, starting within current rules.

Ripple announced a strategic partnership with Meritz Securities on 14 October, and at its core the deal is a custody arrangement rather than a token one. The two companies will explore how Ripple Custody and Ripple's tokenization infrastructure could serve Korea's capital markets. Ripple describes Meritz as one of Korea's leading securities firms.

The interesting question is what Meritz actually gets. Not a product, yet. A plan to look at one.

What Meritz Securities Actually Gets

Ripple Custody is described as a bank-grade platform built for regulated financial institutions, covering the secure storage, transfer and settlement of digital assets. Custody is the unglamorous layer under every tokenized product: someone has to hold the keys, and for a licensed securities firm that someone has to be an institution its regulator recognizes.

Meritz is thinking past custody already. It is exploring spot ETFs, fractional investment and security tokens, trading platforms, and KRW-denominated stablecoins, all in preparation for digital assets entering the regulated financial system. Put that list next to the custody deal and the logic is neat: Meritz wants to be both a venue and an issuer in that market, and it needs the plumbing before it can sell any of it.

The Plan Starts Inside Today's Rulebook

Both companies will begin within the scope of Meritz's existing securities business and current regulation, then widen cooperation in stages as Korea's digital asset framework develops. It is a careful way to sign a deal. No launch date, no promise that a particular token will trade, and room to stop if the rules go another way.

Korea's rulebook is still being written, and the regulator's posture has been firm, including a recent move to block 27 crypto sites such as KuCoin and MEXC.

"Korea is one of the most dynamic digital asset markets in the world and its institutions are preparing to move from exploration to real-world utility." Fiona Murray, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at Ripple

Byungha Kang, Managing Director of Meritz's Strategic Planning Unit, said the partnership lays the foundation for combining Ripple's global digital asset infrastructure with the firm's capital markets capabilities.

A Fourth Korean Partner, and a First

Meritz is Ripple's fourth institutional partnership in Korea this year and its first with a securities firm. The earlier three show the shape of the strategy. Kyobo Life Insurance is using Ripple Custody for what Ripple calls Korea's first tokenized government bond settlement. Kbank, Korea's first internet-only bank, is deploying digital asset wallet infrastructure through Ripple Custody. Jeonbuk Bank became the first Korean regional bank to adopt Ripple Payments for cross-border remittance.

Ripple says it brings infrastructure across payments, custody and tokenization, backed by more than 85 licenses and a network spanning more than 60 markets globally.

What This Deal Does Not Say About XRP

The announcement named no blockchain network for the tokenization work, and no commitment to XRP, RLUSD or the XRP Ledger. That silence is worth sitting with. Ripple's enterprise wins and XRP's price are two separate stories, and this one belongs to the first until Meritz and Ripple say otherwise.

What Is Still Open

Neither company gave a commercial launch date or financial terms. Meritz has not said which of its candidate products gets priority, or whether any planned service will need its own regulatory approval. Every item on its list, from spot ETFs to a won stablecoin, remains exploratory.

Korean press reports describe a signing ceremony on 1 October at Meritz's Yeouido headquarters, with Meritz CEO Jang Won-jae and Ripple President Monica Long attending, and say Meritz announced the partnership on 7 October. Ripple's release is dated 14 October. A signing, a company's own disclosure and a later announcement could all be true at once, and no single page reconciles the three dates.

For now the pairing is easy to understand: a securities firm that wants into digital assets without building custody from scratch, and a custody provider that keeps adding licensed names in a market it clearly rates. The next thing worth watching is a product, not a press release.
