Stablecoin Payments Hit $482B as Solana Chases Smaller Tickets

Stablecoin payments rose 45% to $482 billion through September while supply grew 0.4%, and the average ticket fell to $462, the shape Solana's fees suit.

Stablecoin payment value reached $482 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 45% from a year earlier, while the amount of stablecoin money in existence barely moved. Allium's Q3 report puts supply at about $305 billion at the end of September, up 0.4% since the start of the year.

The same report counts 1.04 billion payments, up 71%, with the average payment down from $544 to $462. September set a monthly high of $72 billion, and third-quarter payment value grew 51% on a year earlier. More transfers, smaller transfers: that is the pattern Solana's fee schedule is priced for.

Solana Prices a Transfer at Half a Tenth of a Cent

Solana's own fee documentation sets a base fee of 0.000005 SOL, or 5,000 lamports, on every transaction, which it puts at $0.0005 at $100 per SOL. Priority fees added during busy periods typically stay under $0.01, the same page says, and it sells the point with a remittance example: sending $10 to family without losing 30% to fees.

Against an average stablecoin payment of $462, half a tenth of a cent is close to nothing. It is also the same base fee whether the ticket is $5 or $5,000, which matters when the growth is coming from smaller transfers rather than larger ones.

Spark research, citing Allium data, estimates a USDC transfer on Solana at roughly $0.0005, against $1 to $10 on Ethereum mainnet and $0.01 to $0.10 on Arbitrum or Optimism. The same research puts Solana's share of adjusted stablecoin transfer volume at 2.6% in early 2024 and 35.5% by February 2026, while the chain held about 5% of total stablecoin supply, with stablecoin velocity reaching 15.5x in January 2026, roughly six times Ethereum's. Those are Spark's measures, and they count transfer volume rather than payments.

Western Union and Samsung Are Already on the Rails

Western Union launched USDPT on May 4, a dollar-denominated stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. on Solana, redeemable 1:1 and fully backed by reserves. The company describes it as a settlement layer running parallel to legacy networks that operate only on business days, so settlement can happen around the clock.

The distribution is the point. Western Union's Digital Asset Network is built to convert digital dollars into local currency at more than 360,000 collection points across more than 200 countries, per Crossmint, which announced its partnership on the rollout in March.

Samsung is next. Solana says Samsung Wallet users in the United States will be able to send money across borders in USDC from the last week of October. The same page names PayPal and Western Union among enterprises already using the network for stablecoin activity, and puts Solana's stablecoin supply up nearly 20% year over year, with more than $5.25 trillion in stablecoin volume processed in 2026 alone.

Settlement and cards are moving in the same direction. Visa has taken USDC prefunding for Visa Direct into commercial use, and Bridge's OUSD is live on Solana and three other chains.

Tron Still Settles the Big Money

None of this makes Solana the default. Allium's report says Tron settled two-thirds of stablecoin payment value in the period and that USDT accounted for 84%. Solana's supply base is smaller than its activity suggests: USDC is about 56% of the chain's stablecoin supply at $7 billion, ahead of USDT at $2.4 billion and PYUSD at $680 million, per Spark research.

The measures also do not line up neatly. Solana's $5.25 trillion figure is transfer volume, Allium's $482 billion is payment value after its own classification, and Solana's roughly $17 billion supply base is a third measure again. Reading them as one number overstates how much consumer payment traffic has actually moved on-chain.

What Would Change the Picture

Three scheduled items test the case:

  • Samsung's USDC remittance rollout, starting the last week of October in the United States.
  • Stable by Western Union, a consumer spend capability Western Union says will launch in 2026 in more than 40 countries.
  • Fee behaviour if volume keeps climbing. The base fee is fixed, but priority fees are what a busy network charges, and Solana's guidance of under $0.01 has not yet met Samsung-scale traffic.

The invalidation is simple to state. If payment growth continues while Solana's share of adjusted transfer volume stalls or falls, fees are not what is driving routing decisions, and Tron's two-thirds of payment value is the base case rather than a legacy position.
