If you have $1,000 to invest and you want to make the most out of that cash, then you have to change your focus from memecoins to projects with solid foundations.

Consider projects with strong fundamentals, good partnerships, quality adoption rate and impressive tech. Two good options are XRP (Ripple) or HBAR (Hedera.) So, when it comes to choosing between them, which should be your priority? Let’s find out in this article.

Not a case of “better than”

We have a great deal of Hedera and XRP followers in our community. And we like both projects because we think they’ve got something going on for them. But if it comes down to picking one for your investment, then there are a couple of factors to consider. So, this is not a case of which project is better than the other. Just comparing them across different yardsticks to figure out which could be best for your portfolio.

What they do
Let’s do a little refresher course on both projects. Now what do they do?

XRP is all about fast, cheap, cross-border payments. It was created by Ripple to help banks and financial institutions move money across borders without delays or high fees. Think of XRP as a bridge for currency, with focus on helping fiat currencies move from point A to point B, instantly. Ripple was one of the earliest cross-border crypto payment platforms. And they’ve been building over the years. So there’s the benefit of longevity.<

How about HBAR?

HBAR powers the Hedera network. Hedera is a super fast, energy-efficient alternative to a blockchain. By this I mean that it was not built like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Hedera uses a unique tech called hashgraph, which makes transactions faster and more secure. HBAR is used for payments, staking, smart contracts, and powering decentralized apps (dApps).

So, in summary
XRP = cross-border payments king.
HBAR = next-gen network for enterprise-grade dApps.

What narrative are they suited for?

Crypto projects tend to explode if their core narrative booms. We saw DeFi and NFT projects win big in 2021 because that was the narrative at the time. So, where do both guys fit?

XRP
At the core of XRP’s narrative is a clear mission to revolutionize cross-border payments. Right now, sending money across borders is slow, expensive, and inefficient. XRP aims to fix that.

Ripple built a system where banks and financial institutions can settle transactions in seconds, and for a fraction of the cost. No more relying on the outdated SWIFT system. XRP has massive adoption potential if it becomes the default rails for global money movement. There’s serious utility in this project. And here’s where it gets even more interesting: things have been working out for Ripple lately. For a while, Ripple’s case with the SEC cast a dark shadow over it.

But that battle ended in Ripple’s favour, giving XRP a clear path. That win lifted a huge cloud and gave investors renewed confidence. Institutions that were hesitant now have regulatory clarity.

HBAR
HBAR is more aligned with enterprise-grade infrastructure and tokenization. Think supply chain, DePIN, and carbon markets. Hedera positions itself as the blockchain alternative for big institutions. Its targets are banks, supply chains, governments, and Fortune 500 companies.

So, both Hedera and Ripple are infrastructure projects at the institutional level. My take is that both have strong positioning in a bull market driven by real-world use cases. Hedera wins big if enterprises and tokenized real-world assets lead the charge. Meanwhile, XRP gains from adoption in cross-border payments, such as ISO20022.

Adoption and partnerships

Now let’s talk about partnerships because in crypto, who you know matters just as much as what you do. Both XRP and HBAR have a good portfolio of partners. RippleNet has 300+ financial institutions onboarded. Big names like Santander, Bank of America, and several pilot CBDC programs.

HBAR adoption isn’t just in financial services, but across multiple industries, thanks to its Hedera Governing Council.
Some big names already on board:

  • Google Cloud
  • IBM
  • Dell
  • Boeing
  • There’s also a recent partnership with Nvidia.

Here’s my take on their partnership; HBAR has more high-profile Web2 names, but XRP has better traction in the fintech and banking space.

Regulatory edge

Regulation matters in today’s crypto. So, how do both projects fare in this area?

Ripple
Ripple’s SEC win brought it out of the mud. For years, the case was a huge setback for Ripple. But a U.S. court ruled that XRP isn’t a security when sold on secondary markets. That has improved investor confidence.

Hedera
Hedera has stayed out of regulatory troubles to date. Its focus on enterprise applications and features like decentralized identity management positions it as a compliant platform. So, there’s reduced regulatory scrutiny.

Market cap and price performance

Let’s talk about numbers. XRP has a market cap of $116.97B. Meanwhile, HBAR has a market cap of $7.26B. So, XRP has a larger market presence than HBAR. HBAR might have more room to run, but XRP has more liquidity and momentum. Plus, XRP’s supply is almost out, while HBAR still has some unlocks.

XRP has been one of the most lucrative cryptos over the past year, increasing by 224.23%. Starting from a price of approximately $0.615 on April 11, 2024, it has risen to its current value of $2.00. Had you invested $1,000 a year ago at that price, you would have acquired approximately 1,626 XRP tokens. At today’s price, those tokens would be worth about $3,252. That’s a substantial return on investment.

HBAR has also made remarkable growth in a year, surging by 66.89%. If you had invested $1,000 on HBAR a year ago, at the price of $0.1023, your investment would have been worth $1,674.85 today. That’s a gain of about $674.85.
Both projects are lucrative. But XRP has had more growth. However, in terms of market cap, HBAR has lots of room for growth. So here’s what I’d do if I had $1k to spend.

Final verdict

Both projects are super amazing projects with a promising future. Given their potential, I’d consider a balanced investment approach. Why choose one when you can diversify? You can allocate 60% of your investment to XRP and 40% to HBAR. This ensures exposure to both the established cross-border payment solution and the emerging enterprise blockchain platform. Ensure you invest based on your risk tolerance. That’s it for today.
