Absa Corporate and Investment Banking went live on September 21 with a Ripple-powered institutional crypto custody product, the first bank-grade offering of its kind in Africa. The platform, called Absa Digital Asset Custody, now has a live product page at cib.absa.africa.

Absa Turns Ripple Partnership into a Live Product

The new custody platform follows the partnership between Absa and Ripple announced in October 2025.

Absa Digital Asset Custody provides institutional clients with private-key management, transaction and approval controls, audit trails, and governance and compliance processes.

The service is focused on custody rather than trading. Absa is effectively providing institutional clients with a banking-based environment for safeguarding and managing digital assets.

Ripple supplies the underlying custody technology and blockchain broadcast capabilities, while Absa provides the banking infrastructure and institutional client relationship.

Reece Merrick, Ripple’s Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, described the launch as a major milestone for bank-grade digital asset infrastructure on the continent.

Ripple Expands Institutional Digital Asset Infrastructure

The Absa launch adds another piece to Ripple’s broader push into institutional digital asset infrastructure.

Ripple has been expanding across custody, payments, stablecoins and tokenization. Its custody technology is designed to give financial institutions controls around private keys, digital assets and transaction management.

The Absa launch now brings that infrastructure into a major African banking market.

Why Institutional Custody Matters

Digital asset custody is an important requirement for banks and other large financial institutions entering the crypto market.

Holding digital assets requires more than simply buying tokens. Institutions also need controls for private keys, transaction approvals, governance, compliance and auditability.

Absa Digital Asset Custody addresses those requirements within an established banking relationship.

The platform therefore gives Absa’s corporate and institutional clients a way to manage digital assets without having to rely solely on crypto-native custody providers.

Africa Becomes Another Institutional Market for Ripple

The launch also expands Ripple’s presence in Africa beyond payments and digital assets.

Absa provides the banking infrastructure, while Ripple supplies the technology underneath the custody service.

That combination could eventually support additional institutional use cases. However, the current launch is specifically focused on digital asset custody, and Absa has not announced broader product extensions.

The next question is whether the service expands across Absa’s other African markets or eventually supports additional assets, stablecoins and tokenized financial products.

For now, the launch establishes Absa Digital Asset Custody as a live institutional platform built with Ripple’s custody technology, giving regulated digital asset infrastructure another foothold in Africa.
