Altcoins Overtake Bitcoin in Open Interest for the First Time Since 2024

Altcoin perpetual futures open interest has surpassed Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024 as the altcoin market expands and Zcash derivatives activity reaches a record.

Altcoin perpetual futures open interest has moved above Bitcoin’s for the first time since December 2024, highlighting a significant shift in derivatives market positioning as traders increase exposure across the broader altcoin market.

According to Coinalyze data, the crossover comes as the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies outside the top 10 rises above $200 billion. At the same time, leverage is increasing across several altcoins with Zcash emerging as one of the strongest contributors to the surge in derivatives activity.

The shift does not mean altcoins have overtaken Bitcoin overall. Instead, it shows that traders are collectively maintaining more outstanding perpetual futures positions across altcoins than in Bitcoin.

Altcoin Open Interest Surpasses Bitcoin

Open interest measures the total value of outstanding futures contracts that have not yet been closed or settled.

When open interest rises, it generally means more positions are being maintained in the derivatives market. However, the metric does not reveal whether those positions are bullish or bearish.

The latest crossover is significant because it has not occurred since December 2024.

The change comes alongside renewed strength across the broader altcoin market. The market capitalization of cryptocurrencies outside the top 10 has risen above $200 billion, gaining more than 10% since the beginning of September.

Bitcoin, meanwhile, continues to trade above $80,000 but its share of aggregate derivatives positioning has declined as traders increase their exposure to other cryptocurrencies.

This growing appetite for altcoin derivatives suggests traders are becoming more willing to take risk beyond Bitcoin.

Zcash Open Interest Hits $2.4 Billion

Zcash (ZEC) has become one of the clearest examples of the growing activity in altcoin derivatives.

Zcash open interest reached a record $2.4 billion in early September as ZEC moved above $1,000.

The sharp rally also resulted in approximately $34 million in short liquidations.

Short liquidations occur when traders betting on a price decline are forced to close their positions after the asset rises against them. Those forced closures can create additional buying pressure, potentially accelerating an existing rally.

Zcash's move shows how individual altcoins can have a meaningful impact on the broader derivatives market when price momentum and leverage increase at the same time.

However, the growth is not limited to ZEC. Rising futures positioning across several altcoins has contributed to the broader shift in open interest.

Higher Leverage Brings Higher Risk

The increase in altcoin open interest also creates a potential source of additional volatility.

Leverage allows traders to control larger positions with less capital. While this can increase returns when prices move in the expected direction, it also makes positions more vulnerable to liquidation.

A relatively small price reversal can therefore trigger forced closures when leverage is high.

Those liquidations can then amplify the original market move. A sharp decline can force leveraged longs to sell, while a strong rally can liquidate short positions and generate additional buying pressure.

This is particularly important for altcoins because many have smaller markets and thinner liquidity than Bitcoin.

The previous time altcoin perpetual futures open interest moved above Bitcoin's was in December 2024. The period was followed by notable corrections across several mid-cap cryptocurrencies.

The current environment is different, however, because the rise in derivatives positioning is occurring alongside an increase in total altcoin market capitalization.

Is This a New Altcoin Cycle?

The latest data could indicate that traders are beginning to rotate toward higher risk assets.

Bitcoin remains the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and continues to dominate individual-asset liquidity. But when traders collectively maintain more perpetual futures positions across altcoins, it can signal increasing interest in opportunities outside BTC.

The rise in Zcash derivatives activity provides one example of this behavior.

Other altcoins could attract similar speculative positioning if their prices continue to outperform Bitcoin. That could push aggregate altcoin open interest even higher.

However, rising open interest should not automatically be interpreted as a bullish signal.

Because open interest includes both long and short positions, the metric primarily shows that more capital is tied up in outstanding derivatives contracts. The direction of the market still depends on how those positions are positioned and how prices develop.

Bitcoin Faces a Changing Derivatives Landscape

For Bitcoin, the key question is whether its derivatives activity eventually catches up with the broader altcoin market.

If altcoin open interest continues to grow while BTC positioning remains relatively stable, the current crossover could become a stronger indication of changing trader preferences.

For altcoins, the challenge is different.

They need to maintain their price momentum while open interest remains elevated. Otherwise, a sudden reversal could trigger widespread liquidations and quickly unwind the leverage that helped drive the rally.

This dynamic has become particularly important following recent crypto market liquidations. Our previous coverage of the $369 million liquidation wave involving Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana showed how quickly leveraged positioning can amplify market declines.

The latest crossover therefore presents both an opportunity and a warning.

With the broader altcoin market capitalization above $200 billion, Zcash open interest at a record $2.4 billion, and aggregate altcoin perpetual futures positioning now above Bitcoin's, traders are clearly taking on more exposure outside the largest cryptocurrency.

Whether that represents the beginning of a sustained altcoin rotation or simply another leverage driven phase will depend on what happens to prices and open interest next.
