Anchorage Digital Applies for CFTC Swap Dealer Registration
Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC has applied to the NFA for CFTC swap dealer registration, putting its institutional options business under federal dealer

Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC has applied to the National Futures Association for registration as a swap dealer with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the company said on 5 November. If approved, the entity behind Anchorage's institutional options business would sit under the same federal dealer rules that already govern the banks on the other side of its trades.
For a reader holding crypto through a fund, a corporate treasury or a custody account, the change is about who supervises the counterparty. Registration covers the dealer's capital, how it manages risk, how it margins and confirms trades, how it reports them, and how it treats its counterparties, according to the announcement.
Anchorage says much of its options growth has come from public companies holding Bitcoin and Ethereum on their balance sheets, and from asset managers and funds using options to manage that exposure. CEO Nathan McCauley framed the filing as a way to meet those clients where they already are: "Swap dealer registration will allow us to meet them there. It will bring our options business under the same federal framework as the dealers they already face."
The $8 Billion Line That Triggers Registration
The NFA's de minimis threshold is $8 billion in aggregate gross notional swap dealing activity over the prior 12 months.
Anchorage said in a post on X that its options business was "scaling past the $8B CFTC's threshold for US based clients." The post itself was not opened for this article and the quoted text comes from secondary reports, so read the figure as the trigger for registering, not as a disclosed trading milestone. No prior-year options or swap volume figure appears in any source, which means there is no measured jump to compare it against.
The threshold is what matters here. A firm below it is exempt from registration; a firm above it is expected to file. Anchorage's own announcement does not put a dollar figure on its options business, and it does not say how far past the line it has gone.
What Swap Dealer Registration Requires
Anchorage describes the regime as the same one the Dodd-Frank Act applied to the banks and dealers behind the interest rate, credit and FX markets. On the administrative side, the NFA requires Form 7-R, an NFA membership application and a non-refundable $15,000 application fee, among other steps.
The application now sits with the NFA. Anchorage has not announced a review timeline, and no effective registration date has been given. Until the NFA acts, the options business operates as it does now.
Anchorage Already Runs Under Three Regulators
Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. says it was the first federally chartered digital asset bank, regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, and a qualified custodian for institutional assets. The group also serves institutions through Anchorage Digital Singapore, licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Anchorage Digital NY, which holds a BitLicense from the New York Department of Financial Services.
Its backers include Andreessen Horowitz, GIC, Goldman Sachs, KKR and Visa. The company was founded in 2017 in San Francisco, and its Series D valued it at over $3 billion. It has since announced a $100 million strategic investment from Tether and an employee tender offer at a $4.2 billion valuation.
The filing comes as Anchorage's custody business keeps expanding into new institutional venues, including its role in Sui's Hashi project as a $500 million Bitcoin launch approaches.
The next checkpoint is the NFA's review. Approval would put a named crypto entity inside a framework built for traditional derivatives dealers; a long review, or a withdrawal, would leave the options desk operating under its existing licences. Neither outcome has been signalled yet, and the brief states no deadline.
