Aztec Tierra Upgrade Patches Critical V5 Flaw and Doubles Proof Speed
Aztec's Tierra upgrade fixes a critical V5 proving flaw that put funds at risk, adds formal verification and cuts Ethereum message times to 12 seconds.

The Aztec Foundation on Tuesday announced Aztec Tierra, a network upgrade designated Alpha V6 for its Ethereum privacy layer. It fixes a critical flaw found in the previous version, adds formal verification of the proving system and, Aztec says, makes private transactions and Ethereum deposits faster.
For anyone with funds or apps on the old network, the bug is the part that matters. Aztec's own disclosure said the V5 finding “places V5 funds, applications, and contract state at risk.” It also said contributors “cannot determine whether anyone exploited the flaw before this finding.” No losses have been confirmed, and none have been ruled out.
The V5 Flaw Could Let a Bad Transaction Through
Core contributors found the problem on 27 July 2026 through internal AI-assisted auditing, and Aztec disclosed it on 7 August. The key clause is short: “An attacker may be able to exploit a flaw in the current V5 proving system by constructing a proof that passes verification for a transaction the network should reject.”
In a privacy network, the proof stands in for the transaction details the network never sees. If a forged proof passes, the network accepts something it should refuse. That is why the finding put balances and contract state at risk, not just individual apps.
At the time, Aztec said the fix was planned for V6. The Tierra announcement says the upgrade “resolves identified vulnerabilities from previous versions, including the critical issue discovered in V5.”
Formal Verification and an AI Testing Harness
Alongside the fix, Aztec says Tierra adds formal verification of core cryptographic components. Formal verification means proving mathematically that code does what its specification says, rather than relying only on tests and audits.
The upgrade also brings a new AI-powered security testing harness, the same kind of tooling that surfaced the V5 bug. The label is worth noting, though: this is still an Alpha release, a stage Aztec itself describes as existing to surface findings like the one in V5.
Faster Proofs and Ethereum Deposits
Aztec gives two speed figures:
- Private transactions now generate proofs on the user's own device in about one second, which Aztec calls a 2x speedup over the previous network.
- A new architecture cuts Ethereum-to-Aztec message delivery from an average of two minutes to “as low as 12 seconds.” That second figure is a best case, not an average.
The faster messaging feeds into deposits. “With Aztec Tierra and zk.money, users can deposit directly from any Ethereum wallet and make lightning-fast private transactions without complicated bridging workflows,” said Joe Andrews, co-founder and CEO of Aztec Labs, which runs zk.money.
Launch Apps Include Liquid Staking for AZTEC
Aztec's launch list includes Xochi for private intents and trading, Nyx for private payments to any Ethereum wallet, and Olla, which offers liquid staking for the AZTEC token. For token holders, Olla is the most direct new option on the list.
The network itself has more than 3,000 validators. Aztec says it has no privileged viewing keys and no centralized sequencer, the operator that orders transactions on many layer 2 networks. “Privacy shouldn't be something you have to request or trust someone else to protect. It should be built into the network,” said Zac Williamson, co-founder and CEO of the Aztec Foundation. “Unstoppable apps need unstoppable infrastructure,” he added.
Migration From V5 Is Not Yet Confirmed
The open question for V5 users is how they move. Whether existing contracts must be recompiled and redeployed at new addresses, and how long V5 will keep receiving support, has not been confirmed in Aztec's announcement. Until Aztec spells out that path, anyone still on V5 is relying on a version its own developers have said puts funds at risk.
