Bessent Expects $1B Iran-Linked Crypto Seizure This Week

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US would probably seize $1 billion of Iran-linked crypto this week. No tokens, addresses or venues were named.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US is probably going to seize about a billion dollars of crypto during the week of the interview, and that authorities already know where the assets sit. He named no token, no wallet address, no exchange and no legal mechanism behind the figure, and Treasury has not officially announced that any such seizure has been made.

The remarks came in an interview with Greta Van Susteren at Newsmax's NPolicy Summit in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Bessent described the administration's Iran strategy as a shift away from maximum pressure toward what he called an absolute isolation campaign, one that he said includes financial limits, maritime controls and travel restrictions.

"We're probably gonna seize a billion dollars of crypto this week."

"And, you know, we know where it is and we are isolating them."

"We did have a maximum pressure campaign. Now we have an absolute isolation campaign and it's working," he said.

The gap between the size of the claim and the detail attached to it is the story here. Treasury's own releases this quarter have named vessels, an exchange and a financier. The $1 billion figure arrived with none of that.

What Treasury Has Actually Designated

On October 8, OFAC designated 17 shadow fleet vessels for transporting Iranian crude oil and petroleum and petrochemical products, acting under Executive Order 13902. Treasury framed the action as effectively neutralizing the vast majority of Iran's remaining shadow fleet network.

The same notice cut the other way for two ships. OFAC removed the HAKUNA MATATA and the PINOCCHIO from the sanctions list after their sale to non-sanctioned operators. Both had been identified in June 2025 as part of Iran's shadow fleet.

"Treasury is starving the tyrannical regime in Tehran of the money it uses to wage war in the region, and we will continue exposing those who enable the regime's oil sales," Bessent said in that release. The US has run the same play against other networks, including a France-linked Hamas crypto network.

BitBank Moved Bitcoin to the IRGC, Treasury Says

On September 17, OFAC designated BitBank, a digital assets venture controlled by designated Iranian financier Babak Zanjani, plus developer Pishtaz Simorgh and three associates. Treasury said Zanjani used BitBank between June and July 2026 to move hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of Bitcoin to the IRGC.

Those designations also ran under E.O. 13902, which Treasury expanded to target Iran's digital asset sector as part of Economic D-Day. Bessent announced that campaign on August 24, 2026 under the name Operation Economic Outcast.

The $61 Million Complaint Sets the Documented Scale

On September 14, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York filed a civil forfeiture complaint against approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency, described as proceeds of black-market sales of sanctioned Iranian crude oil and petroleum products.

Prosecutors alleged that a network of crypto actors in China and elsewhere laundered more than $1.5 billion in illicit oil money intended to benefit the Iranian military and the IRGC. The complaint names two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, as alleged users of trading accounts at UAE-based Binance, and describes a series of interrelated unhosted addresses termed Entity A that received and distributed more than approximately $1.5 billion.

That filing is an allegation. A civil forfeiture complaint is not proven until a court awards judgment for the United States.

Tether Has Frozen $550 Million in 2026

Tether said its USDT actions in 2026 froze approximately $550 million across wallets that US authorities identified as connected to Iran's Central Bank and Iranian sanctions networks.

The detail behind that total is specific. In April 2026, Tether supported freezing more than $344 million across two addresses, acting on information from OFAC and US law enforcement, and OFAC added those addresses to the Central Bank of Iran designation the next day. In July 2026, more than $130 million across four wallets was frozen as Treasury expanded that designation to include four additional TRON addresses.

Addresses, chains and dates: the earlier actions carry all three. The anticipated $1 billion does not, so far.

How the Figure Compares With Bessent's Earlier Numbers

Bessent's prior public figures placed cumulative seizures of Iranian-linked cryptocurrency at roughly $1 billion as of late May, after an April estimate near $500 million. The amount he described for a single week is therefore about the size of the entire cumulative total he cited four months earlier, and his remarks do not say whether the new figure is additional to that total or included in it.

Chainalysis put Iran's crypto ecosystem at over $7.78 billion in 2025. IRGC-associated addresses accounted for over 50% of total values received in Iran's crypto economy in Q4 2025, and receipts to those addresses rose from over $2 billion in 2024 to more than $3 billion in 2025.

Those Chainalysis numbers measure funds received, not funds seized. The two sit at opposite ends of the same flow, which is why the $1 billion cannot be read as a share of Iranian crypto activity.

What Would Confirm the Seizure

A Treasury or DOJ release naming the assets, an OFAC designation tied to them, or a filed forfeiture complaint would turn the $1 billion from an expected action into a recorded one. Until one of those appears, the figure stands as a statement of intent from the Treasury Secretary.

The documented enforcement record this quarter is smaller and better sourced: 17 vessels designated on October 8, the BitBank and Zanjani designations on September 17, a $61 million forfeiture complaint filed on September 14, and $550 million in stablecoin freezes across 2026. Each of those came with a name attached.
