Bitcoin Back Near $82,000 After a Two-Hour Drop Below $80,000

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 on Thursday and was back near $82,500 within two hours, as hot September CPI data and heavy ETF outflows weighed on crypto.

Bitcoin traded below $80,000 on Thursday and was back near $82,500 inside two hours, with buyers meeting a slide that ran to about $79,720 and broke the roughly $80,400 level they had defended twice in the previous week.

The dip was bitcoin's lowest price since Sept. 18, and it closed a week in which a hotter September inflation print and a run of ETF outflows had already leaned on the market. Bitcoin held above $81,000 through Asian trading and was near $82,000 on Friday morning, up about 1.3%.

The wider market had taken the damage earlier in the week. The total crypto market cap stood at $2.76 trillion on Wednesday afternoon, 4.50% below its level 24 hours earlier, with bitcoin at $81,712 and ether at $2,420.

The AI Trade Cracked First, and Miners Felt It

The selling started in equities. The Nasdaq 100 fell as far as 1.8% intraday, and signs of slowing revenue growth at Anthropic deepened questions about the AI trade. In Asia, South Korea's Kospi plunged 8% and tripped circuit breakers before recovering, climbing nearly 3% on Friday after closing at its lowest since April.

Bitcoin miners with data-centre exposure sat in the middle of it. TeraWulf chief executive Paul Prager called it "a brutal few days across the AI infrastructure sector", adding that his own company was no exception. TeraWulf shares were up 9.2% on Thursday but still 9% lower over five days.

September CPI Rose 0.6% and Core Held at 2.6%

The macro backdrop turned on Wednesday. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in September after a 0.4% gain in August, and the annual rate reached 3.7%, up from 3.4% a month earlier, Bureau of Labor Statistics data show. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% over the 12 months.

Wholesale prices added to the pressure on Thursday. The Producer Price Index recorded its largest monthly increase since March 2022, with wholesale gasoline prices up 20.3% in September, giving traders another reason to sell risk assets into the US session.

The Federal Reserve raised rates in September for the first time in more than three years, taking the target range to 3.75%-4%, and meets next on Oct. 27-28.

ETFs Took In $5.1 Million on Oct 15 After Heavy October Outflows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in a net $5.1 million on Oct 15, Farside Investors data show, a thin positive after $261.4 million of net outflows on Oct 14 and $175.7 million of inflows on Oct 13, when FBTC led with $103.1 million and IBIT added $65.9 million.

The heavier days came earlier in the month: $484.9 million left the funds on Oct 7 and $244.1 million on Oct 8. The stretch of outflows carried into midweek, which is part of what made Thursday's break below $80,000 read as continuation rather than a one-off shock.

Altcoins Took the Heavier Losses, and Ether Longs Paid for It

Ether fell 2.0% to near $2,370 on Thursday while bitcoin lost a fraction of that, and the split showed up across the large caps:

  • The CoinDesk 80 index of large altcoins slid 2.2%, against a 0.7% loss for the bitcoin-heavy CoinDesk 5.
  • Pump.fun fell 9.4% and the CoinDesk Memecoin Index lost 4.0%, leaving all but six of the CD100 members lower.
  • Solana slipped 1.1% to about $103, but Jito lost 6.2% and Jupiter 6.1%.

Hedging flows told the same story. Nearly $1 billion in crypto futures bets were liquidated over 24 hours after the inflation print, up from about $136 million a day earlier, and ether longs carried $200 million of that against $115 million in bitcoin. Bitcoin's notional futures open interest rose 1.6% while spot fell, implying the number of contracts rose roughly 3.7%.

Not everything fell. ZEC jumped 8% to about $1,190 on Friday, and Pyth network added 2.8%, extending a rally that began Oct. 8 after its DAO voted to direct all product revenue into monthly buybacks. Bitcoin's share of total market value rose to 59.4% as smaller tokens sold off harder than the largest one.

What a Retest of $84,000 Would Confirm

A push back above $84,000, where Wednesday's post-inflation spike ran out of steam, would show the bounce has real buyers behind it rather than a short squeeze. The next scheduled catalyst is Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's appearance at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on Friday, two days after the inflation print, followed by the Fed's Oct. 27-28 meeting.

Options pricing has cooled with the price. The implied probability of bitcoin reaching $100,000 by Christmas sits at 9.7% on Derive.xyz, down 2.8 percentage points in 24 hours, a level that says traders are not treating the recovery above $81,000 as the start of anything bigger yet.
