Bitcoin Community Debates BIP-177 Unit Redefinition

BIP-177 aims to flip the script on Bitcoin units, replacing confusing decimals with everyday language to drive mainstream adoption.

Bitcoin Community Debates BIP-177 Unit Redefinition

Bitcoin users are getting excited over a new proposal called BIP-177, and it’s all about how we measure the currency. Currently, 1 Bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis (or “sats” for short). But BIP-177 suggests flipping things around.

Instead of using “sats” as the smallest unit, the proposal wants to call that smallest unit a “bitcoin” (with a lowercase ‘b’), and keep BTC as the symbol for 100 million of them.

What Is BIP-177 Trying to Do?

The main goal is clarity. Supporters believe that calling the smallest unit “bitcoin” instead of “sat” will make the currency easier to understand, especially for newcomers. No more tiny decimal points like 0.000045 BTC. Instead, it could be something like 4,500 bitcoins (lowercase “b”) under the new naming system. Another way to say it is, “I sent you 4,500 bitcoin,” rather than “I sent you 0.000045 BTC.”

Because the Bitcoin community is constantly working with decimals, this change could make everyday use of Bitcoin easier.

One of the most notable names to show support for this is Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block. He shared his backing in a subtle but strong way—just tweeting “BIP-177.” That quiet post lit up the community.

Followers argue that saying “sats” leads to unnecessary confusion for people new to the system, and using “bitcoin” everywhere better reflects how it was initially developed. Supporters claim this move would help people who use the currency daily.

But Not Everyone’s Sold

Some people are less than excited. Many worry that changing the name could confuse users even more, especially if different sites use the new name differently. Some worry that scammers may use this change to confuse those unfamiliar with the updated system.
BIP-177 is just a proposal for now. The community has not adopted it yet, and must support it to move forward.

Conclusion

The debate demonstrates how much attention the Bitcoin community gives to improving the currency for everyone. Uncertainty around BIP-177 still has us considering ease of use, simple speech, and mainstream adoption in Bitcoin. Be sure to pay attention, because even little updates matter.
