Bitcoin Drops as September CPI Beats Forecasts at 3.7%

September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% forecast, and core inflation beat on both measures. Bitcoin fell within minutes of the release.

US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the 12 months to September, above the 3.6% economists had expected, and bitcoin fell in the minutes after the 8:30 a.m. ET release. The monthly headline number matched forecasts at 0.6%. Core inflation did not: it beat on both the monthly and the annual measure.

Bitcoin dropped from about $83,860 to a low of $82,731 within five minutes of the release, then steadied near $83,125, measured on Binance data. A separate reading had the fall at about $1,000, to $82,800. Gold fell from $4,153 to $4,117 an ounce in the same window.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics release puts headline CPI at 0.6% month on month on a seasonally adjusted basis, up from 0.4% in August, and 3.7% over the 12 months to September.

Core Inflation Beats Forecasts on Both Measures

Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% in September, the same pace as August and a tenth above the 0.2% consensus. Over 12 months it ran at 2.6%, against 2.5% expected and 2.4% in August.

The upside surprise sits in energy. Energy prices rose 5.2% in September and gasoline 9.1%; over 12 months the two are up 20.4% and 34.2%. Shelter rose 0.4% on the month and 3.2% over the year.

That is the last major inflation reading before the Fed's next meeting, and it landed on the wrong side of consensus.

Yields Rose as Bitcoin Held the $81,000 Line

The 10-year Treasury yield jumped 9.3 basis points to 5.308%, and the 2-year rose 13.1 basis points to 4.924%. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 0.65% and S&P 500 futures 0.3%.

Bitcoin's move fits inside a range it has traded all week. It spiked to $84,000 early Wednesday and faded to about $83,200 within the hour, down 0.5%, before the inflation print. It has stayed boxed between its 50-day moving average near $81,000 and a ceiling at $84,000, and buyers defended the moving average on Tuesday when it bottomed near $81,000. The $81,000 area is the level that has held. The $84,000 ceiling is the one it has not broken.

One More Hike Still Points to December

The Fed raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point on Sept. 16 to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, a unanimous 12 to 0 vote, and said in the same statement that inflation remains elevated and the action would support a timelier return to the 2% goal. It lifted the rate paid on reserve balances to 3.90% and the primary credit rate to 4.0%, effective Sept. 17.

Before Wednesday's release, rate futures pointed to the next hike coming at the December meeting rather than the one later this month. A print this hot shifts the question to how soon, not whether.

Utkarsh Ahuja, founder and managing partner of Moon Pursuit Capital, said higher inflation can keep Treasury yields elevated, support the dollar and increase the cost of capital, all of which create challenges for crypto and growth-oriented investments.

Until bitcoin breaks one of the two levels it has respected this week, the CPI report has moved the rate conversation further than it has moved the price. The Fed's next meeting, and whether the next inflation reading confirms September's acceleration, are the two scheduled tests that follow.
