Bitcoin Enters September With 3 Warning Signs After 24% August Rally

Bitcoin enters September after a 24% August rally, but three warning signs could challenge BTC's momentum: exchange reserves, ETF flows and spot demand.

Bitcoin (BTC) is heading into September after gaining roughly 24% in August, its strongest monthly advance of 2026.

The rally pushed Bitcoin from the $60,000 range to briefly above $80,000. But momentum is showing signs of weakening as the month closes.

Three indicators are now flashing caution: rising Binance reserves, weakening Bitcoin ETF demand and muted spot buying.

1. Binance Bitcoin Reserves Hit a 2026 High

Bitcoin reserves on Binance have climbed to roughly 687,000 BTC, the highest level recorded this year, according to CryptoQuant data.

That compares with around 617,000 BTC in late April before reserves began rising again.

Higher exchange balances can be a warning because traders often move Bitcoin to exchanges when preparing to sell, hedge positions or use their holdings as collateral. More coins sitting on an exchange therefore means potentially greater immediately available supply.

However, rising reserves do not automatically signal selling. Custody movements, wallet reorganizations and institutional transfers can also affect exchange balances.

The timing is nevertheless notable. Binance reserves are rising while Bitcoin trades near the $80,000 area, increasing the amount of supply that could potentially meet buyers if the rally continues.

XWIN Japan warned that Bitcoin's next move above $80,000 could depend on whether spot and ETF demand is strong enough to absorb that additional supply.

2. Bitcoin ETF Inflows Are Losing Momentum

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs provided another warning at the end of August.

The funds recorded $201.8 million in net outflows on August 28, according to SoSoValue, ending a nine-session inflow streak.

That reversal came after the ETFs attracted more than $3 billion during the nine-session run.

Weekly demand also weakened. Net inflows fell 51.8% to $924.5 million in the week ending August 28, compared with $1.92 billion the previous week.

The slowdown does not prove that institutional demand has reversed. Ethereum ETFs still attracted $102.18 million on August 28, while XRP and Solana products recorded $26.2 million and $18.08 million in inflows, respectively.

Still, Bitcoin ETF flows remain one of the market's most important sources of spot demand. A sustained slowdown could make it harder for BTC to absorb additional selling pressure around $80,000.

3. Weekend Rally Raises Spot Demand Questions

The third warning sign comes from Bitcoin's spot market.

Analyst Crypto Rover argued that Bitcoin's weekend advance was occurring without a corresponding increase in spot buying.

Spot cumulative volume delta (CVD) measures the balance between aggressive buying and selling in spot markets.

When Bitcoin rises while spot CVD remains relatively flat, it can indicate that derivatives or leveraged positions are contributing more to the move than direct spot purchases.

That setup can become fragile if leveraged traders begin closing positions.

However, the signal is not universally bearish. GSR's Andy Baehr has described the move above $80,000 as part of a new market regime supported by ETF demand and short liquidations.

September Could Put the Rally to the Test

Bitcoin's historical September performance adds another layer of caution.

According to CoinGlass data, September has produced an average 3.08% loss for Bitcoin since 2013, making it historically the weakest month of the year.

Recent performance has been more favorable, however. Bitcoin closed the last three Septembers higher, including gains of 5.16% in 2025 and 7.29% in 2024.

Bitcoin Monthly Returns

That makes seasonality a secondary signal rather than a reason by itself to expect a decline.

The more important question is whether fresh spot and ETF demand can absorb the additional Bitcoin now sitting on exchanges.

After a 24% August rally, Bitcoin may enter September with momentum still intact but with several indicators suggesting that the next leg higher may require significantly stronger real buying.
