Bitcoin Slips Below $84,000 as $485 Million in Longs Liquidate

Bitcoin fell as low as $83,840 and CoinGlass recorded $485.21 million in long liquidations over 24 hours, as oil climbed on Iranian tanker attacks.

Bitcoin fell as low as about $83,840 early Wednesday, breaking below the $84,000 line that FxPro had called "a victory for the bears" a day earlier. CoinGlass put 24-hour crypto liquidations at $553.13 million, of which $485.21 million were long positions, across 104,388 traders.

That is the shape of the move: a 1.5% price drop, and a forced-selling bill paid almost entirely by one side of the book.

Bitcoin's Drop and the Liquidations Behind It

Bitcoin traded near $86,600 on Tuesday before the fall, and was at about $84,200, down 1.5%, during Wednesday's Asian morning hours. CoinGlass showed BTC at $84,068.30, down 1.78%, with $131.27 million of BTC longs liquidated over 24 hours.

The exchange split is lopsided. In the four hours before the CoinGlass reading, Binance liquidations totalled $228.52 million, $224.87 million of it long, and Hyperliquid's $60.16 million was $60.15 million long. The largest single order was an ETHUSDC position on Binance worth $26.64 million. Shorts were a small share of the 24-hour total, at $67.92 million.

Among the majors, altcoins fell harder on a percentage basis: DOGE slid 5% to about 9 cents, HYPE dropped nearly 4% to about $91, ether lost 3.5% to about $2,610 and XRP fell nearly 3% to about $1.46.

For scale, CoinGlass lists the largest liquidation event on record as October 10, 2025, at $19.16 billion, tied to a US tariff hike on China.

Oil Climbs as Tanker Attacks Continue in Hormuz

Brent rose almost 1% to about $101.50 a barrel after Iran picked up the pace of its attacks on tankers. Futures reached $101.51 a barrel on Tuesday, against $72.48 on the day before the US-Israel war began on February 28, after which Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.

On Monday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard hailed down a tanker transiting the strait and ordered the ship to turn around or face attack, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre. The vessel complied. On Tuesday, the Panamanian-flagged On Peace was struck 9 nautical miles off the Omani port city of Limah and set on fire, and Oman's air force evacuated 10 crew members. India's Ministry of External Affairs said 12 of the ship's 19 crew were injured, and that 17 of the 19 were Indian nationals.

The toll is wider than one vessel. The International Maritime Organization counts at least nine sailors dead, 18 injured and three missing in the area since July. The Joint Maritime Information Center says nearly 20 commercial ships, mostly tankers, have come under attack over the past month. Windward's Michelle Wiese Bockmann put the third-quarter rate at roughly two ships attacked for every 100 that crossed.

The flows have adapted, though. Kpler data had the seven-day moving average for Middle East crude exports at 18.3 million barrels per day on September 30, against an average of about 18 million bpd in the 12 months before the war. Gulf oil flows excluding Iran recovered to more than 81% of pre-war levels in September, and crude exports from the wider Middle East topped pre-war levels on 14 days that month. Kpler estimates about 40% of oil exports now bypass the strait.

Oil, the Dollar and a Cause That Is Not Proven

Oil did not move alone. The dollar strengthened against every other G10 currency, the 10-year Treasury yield climbed three basis points to 5.31%, MSCI's Asia Pacific gauge fell 0.6% even after record closes for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and US stock futures reversed earlier gains.

Those moves are concurrent with bitcoin's fall, not a proven chain. Oil, yields and the dollar all shifted in the same session, and no data read for this article establishes which one pulled the price.

The next scheduled input is the Fed's September meeting minutes, due later Wednesday. That meeting raised rates by a quarter point. Ahead of the release, CME FedWatch priced a 20.5% chance of at least a 25 basis point hike in October, down from about 51% a week earlier, and an 84.5% chance of a hike in December.

What Would Confirm a Bounce

Bitcoin sat about $1,200 above the $83,000 low FxPro flagged. Alex Kuptsikevich, the firm's chief market analyst, said a break below the recent local lows at $83,000 would confirm the bear case "with even greater certainty," and that bitcoin could then fall to $80,000 fairly quickly. That is the line that would put sellers in control.

Above the market, the Binance liquidation heatmap flagged $87,150 as a core level to monitor in case of a price rise. Positioning into the drop was not stretched: BTC open interest was roughly flat at $21.9 billion from $22.0 billion, and funding rates cooled to broadly 0 to 5% annualized from an elevated 4 to 10% range.

So the two levels on the board are $83,000 below and $87,150 above, with the Fed minutes landing between them later Wednesday.
