Block Joins x402 Foundation with Bitcoin Lightning Support

Block has joined the x402 Foundation and added Bitcoin Lightning support to the open payment protocol, the company said this week, expanding its push into payments for AI agents.

A September 23 commit in x402's public development repository recorded "exact Lightning on lnbtc," adding the Lightning specification to the project the day before Block disclosed its participation. That commit is what your timeline is pointing at if you have seen the post doing the rounds.

What x402 actually is

x402 is an open payment standard, originally created by Coinbase and now housed under the Linux Foundation, that lets software request and settle payments during an ordinary web interaction. It does this by using the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response code, the long-dormant internet status code that a server can return when an AI agent asks for a paid API or dataset. The agent then pays, gets the response, and moves on.

Coinbase contributed x402 to the Linux Foundation in April, with the x402 Foundation announced the same month as a neutral body to oversee development outside any one vendor. Block now joins Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase and the Solana Foundation in backing it.

Why Lightning and why now

Steve Lee, who runs Block's Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, framed the integration as a step toward making Bitcoin everyday money for people and the agents acting on their behalf. Block says Lightning is suited to the low-cost, high-volume payments that agentic commerce will depend on, and Lee said agents "will make billions of small payments" once the rails are in place.

That is Block's expectation for agentic commerce, not measured Lightning demand. Block did not publish transaction volumes, merchant deployments or AI-agent usage figures tied to its Lightning implementation alongside the announcement.

What it does not change for you yet

For Bitcoin holders wondering when this shows up in the apps you use, the honest answer is: not yet. Block has not announced a timetable for integrating Lightning-based x402 payments directly into Square, Cash App, Bitkey or its other consumer products. The September 24 roadmap commits the company to continued Lightning contributions, x402 Foundation working group work, and further agentic-commerce tooling, with no shipping dates for retail surfaces.

The broader x402 ecosystem is still dominated by stablecoins. Circle said USDC accounted for 99.3% of x402 payment volume measured during its second quarter. x402's official site, as of this week, listed 75.41 million transactions, $24.24 million in volume, 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers over the previous 30 days, covering x402 as a whole rather than Bitcoin Lightning specifically.

The wider agentic-payments picture

Block's move builds on its participation in the Universal Commerce Protocol, an effort Google describes as an open-source standard connecting consumer-facing AI systems with merchant infrastructure across product discovery and checkout. Block has also contributed goose, its open-source AI agent, helped establish the Agentic AI Foundation, and previously backed the Universal Commerce Protocol initiative.

Other networks and platforms have been adding x402 support at the same time. AI-agent payment support reached Cardano's software stack this week with a TypeScript release and a facilitator tested on the network's pre-production environment, though mainnet use has not yet been demonstrated. Agentic payment activity on XRP Ledger passed one million x402 transactions by July. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore's autonomous payment integration added Coinbase x402 infrastructure for USDC transactions inside enterprise spending and compliance controls. The Graph implemented pay-per-request access to blockchain data, letting developers and AI agents purchase individual Graph Gateway queries using x402.

Erik Reppel, x402's creator and a Technical Steering Committee member, said the protocol was designed so different networks could be added without tying the standard to one payment rail. Lightning is now the latest addition, with Block the public backer behind it.
