BNY Brings Regulated Crypto Custody to EU Institutions Under MiCA

BNY expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform to EU institutions under MiCA.

A comic-style bank vault door marked with the BNY logo stands open ringed by European Union stars, with a key, a shield and four coin discs in front of it.

BNY said on October 8, 2026 that it has expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform. The service now covers select institutions in the European Union, under the bloc's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework.

Here is what changes in practice. An EU institution wants a regulated bank to hold, administer and transfer crypto-assets. It can now do that through BNY's European entity. A retail holder gets nothing from the announcement itself. No product, no fee, no coin added to anything they can trade. BNY names no clients, no revenue figure and no EU member state where the platform operates.

The expansion follows a July 2026 listing. The European Securities and Markets Authority added The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, BNY's European banking entity, to the MiCA register, according to the company. BNY says that registration allows it to provide custody, administration and transfer services for crypto-assets. It calls the bloc one of the world's largest regulated markets for digital assets. The ESMA register was not opened for this article. The July listing rests on BNY's own account.

What the Registration Covers

Digital Asset Custody is the foundation of BNY's digital asset capabilities, the company says. It supports digital cash, tokenized assets, payments, settlement and collateral mobility. The platform launched in 2022. It offers safekeeping and servicing of digital assets. The technology includes multiparty computation, segregated client wallets and storage of private keys.

On its digital assets page, BNY says it applies the same security and risk management standards to digital assets as to traditional ones. That includes bankruptcy stay protection. That is the part a client is paying for. The assets sit apart from the bank's own book if the bank fails.

Emily Portney, BNY's Global Head of Asset Servicing, said the platform was not built as a standalone product. It was drawn from the controls behind the bank's existing asset servicing business.

Four Assets, and an Ambition for More

BNY says it can provide regulated access to BTC, ETH, SOL and USDC. It has ambitions to support a broader set of crypto-assets and stablecoins. Beyond those four, nothing is confirmed as live. The release does not say which of the four an EU client can custody from day one. Nor does it say whether the list differs by market.

The First G-SIB Claim Comes With a Footnote

The press release calls BNY one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital asset custody in the region. Its digital assets page goes further. It says BNY is the first G-SIB to offer regulated digital asset custody and services. A footnote limits the claim: it holds until another G-SIB, or global systemically important financial institution, launches a crypto assets custody offering in the US. A first that expires by its own terms is a strange thing to print.

The same page carries a warning BNY does not bury. Digital assets are not insured by the FDIC, are not deposits and may lose value.

Who BNY Says It Is Building For

Jennifer Barker, Head of Europe at BNY, listed the demand base. It includes banks and broker-dealers expanding crypto and stablecoin offerings. It also includes asset managers and corporate treasurers exploring digital payments and tokenized securities. Her case for the expansion:

To support increasingly digital strategies, institutions need solutions with the same resilience, oversight and safeguards they rely on across traditional operations.

Carolyn Weinberg, BNY's Chief Innovation and Market Transformation Officer, said the expansion reflects continued investment. That investment connects traditional and digital financial ecosystems.

For scale, BNY reported $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration as of June 30, 2026. It reported $2.2 trillion in assets under management. It says it serves over 90% of Fortune 100 companies and nearly all of the top 100 banks globally. Against that book, crypto custody is small. The announcement carries no revenue figure for it and no named customer. Whether the European platform signs one, and whether the four supported assets grow, is the next thing to check.
