The California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) has reported holding $83 million worth of MSTR shares
This move paid off, as the value of its holdings nearly doubled, jumping by a remarkable 93.5% from $42.7 million at the end of Q3 to $82.7 million by December 31, 2024.
According to CalSTRS’ 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, this boost in the value of MSTR shares is a clear signal that the fund is capitalizing on Strategy’s (formerly MicroStrategy) growing presence in the cryptocurrency space. Strategy, now rebranded to highlight its crypto-centric vision, is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, which has contributed significantly to its stock value.
In a big move earlier this month, Strategy added 7,633 BTC to its Bitcoin reserves, worth around $742.4 million, increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 478,740 BTC, valued at over $46 billion. This aggressive strategy in the digital asset market has undoubtedly boosted the company’s stock price, and CalSTRS seems to be reaping the rewards.
The significant rise in MSTR shares has also come alongside a slight decrease in CalSTRS’ holdings in Coinbase Global. The fund trimmed its Coinbase shares by 707, leaving it with 306,215 shares. However, the value of its Coinbase stock still surged, rising from $54.6 million to $76 million in Q4-2024.
In Q4-2024, several major shareholders significantly boosted their MSTR holdings, adding over 1 million shares.
This strong group includes prominent financial institutions such as UBS Group AG, Cantor Fitzgerald L.P., Clear Street Derivatives LLC, Bank of Montreal, Norges Bank, National Bank of Canada, and BlackRock, Inc., signaling strong confidence in the company’s prospects.
