Cardano (ADA) Records Its Highest Transaction Count Since 2021

Cardano processed 1,780,896 transactions in Epoch 660, its busiest five-day stretch in about five years, while two governance votes expired short of quorum.

Cardano's busiest epoch in about five years was not the work of a new app or a token launch. It was a deadline.

The network processed 1,780,896 transactions during Epoch 660, which ran from October 6 to October 11, 2026, as recorded on AdaStat and Cardanoscan. That clears the previous five-day record of 1,566,974 transactions from Epoch 304, which ran in November 2021 and is still listed on Cardanoscan and AdaStat.

Two governance votes closed on the same day the epoch did. Both expired short of quorum. The deadline, not the apps, is the story.

1.78 Million Transactions in Five Days

Epoch 660 packed those transactions into 21,243 blocks, of which 21,053 carried at least one transaction. Total output for the epoch came to ₳46.71 billion, against a circulating supply of ₳37.87 billion and total stake of ₳21.39 billion.

The comparison with the epoch before it is what shows the spike. Epoch 659 processed 158,011 transactions. Epoch 660 did roughly eleven times that.

Two Votes That Ran Out of Time

AdaStat's governance actions page lists both proposals as Expired, each with a voting deadline of October 11, 2026, the day Epoch 660 ended.

  • Reduce minPoolCost to 75 ADA: DRep Yes 44.18% (₳1.64 billion), No 55.82% (₳2.08 billion).
  • Withdraw 11,787,063 ADA for the OpenZeppelin Stack administered by Intersect: DRep Yes 4.00% (₳171.85 million), No 96.00% (₳4.12 billion).

Both cleared the Constitutional Committee at 71.43%. Neither cleared the DReps, where Intersect's weekly update puts the threshold at 67%.

That same update, published two days before the deadline, had DRep support at 34.09% for the pool cost cut and 3.83% for the treasury withdrawal. Support grew as wallets activated, and still fell short. The extra transactions on Cardano in those five days were largely the cost of that attempt.

The Next Epoch Shows What Drove the Traffic

AdaStat's page for Epoch 661 showed 116,464 transactions with the epoch 18% through its slots. If that pace held to the end, the total would land near 650,000, well under the record and closer to a normal stretch of activity.

A separate description of Epoch 661 as running at 38% capacity utilisation does not line up neatly with the AdaStat reading. The two figures were taken at different points in the epoch, and neither page settles the question on its own.

The Count Says Less Than the Headline Suggests

Transaction counts measure activity, not people. Chain density in Epoch 660 was 4.92%, almost identical to Epoch 304's 4.88%, so the chain was not running markedly closer to its limits in one period than the other.

Whether the wallets that appeared were humans voting or automated scripts is not something any of these pages establishes. The count also arrived with a caveat: Intersect reported that 30% of block production in Epoch 660 was still being validated by node versions older than 11.1.2, three weeks after a critical upgrade was released.

ADA Did Not Follow the Transactions

AdaStat's epoch summary showed ADA at $0.2429 with a market capitalisation of $9.2 billion when it was read. Another set of figures, taken at a different moment, put the price nearer $0.2534. That gap is what you get from pages read hours apart, and it is worth remembering before attaching a single number to a five-day event.

The thing to watch is Epoch 661's final total, and whether DRep turnout at this scale becomes routine in the Voltaire era or fades once the next deadline passes.
