Cardano Card to Shut Down on October 31 as Wirex Drops Custody

The Cardano Card ends on 31 October 2026 as issuer Wirex leaves custodial services. Here's what the card offered and what holders still don't know.

The Cardano Card has an end date. The program's official account on X said the card will be discontinued on 31 October 2026, adding that "your card will keep working as normal until then." That leaves holders a little under three weeks of ordinary spending.

The reason lies with the card's partner. Wirex, which issues the card, is moving to a non-custodial model and closing down its custodial infrastructure. "Because of that, our partnership with Wirex ends on 31 Oct 2026," the post said.

No replacement card, new provider or other payment arrangement has been confirmed.

What the Cardano Card Offered at Launch

EMURGO announced the partnership with Wirex in November 2025 at the Cardano Summit in Berlin. The card lived inside the Wirex app, which EMURGO described as a payments platform with over six million users in 130 countries.

The pitch was broad. You could spend more than 685 cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, including ADA, BTC, ETH and USDC, anywhere Visa is accepted, online or in a shop. The card's own site also lists SOL, XRP and USDT, and describes the card as distributed by EMURGO and issued by Wirex, a principal member of both Visa and Mastercard.

The extras went beyond spending:

  • Up to 8% crypto cashback on purchases, plus referral bonuses
  • Yield through Wirex X-Accounts
  • Access to loans and structured trading products
  • A share of profits intended for the Cardano Treasury

The Non-Custodial Card Was Already on the Roadmap

Here's the detail that makes this shutdown odd. A custodial card means the provider holds your crypto for you. A non-custodial one leaves the keys, and the funds, with you.

At launch, EMURGO laid out a second phase built on exactly that idea:

"In phase two, it will expand to an innovative non-custodial Cardano card solution forecasted for release in 2026."

So Wirex is now heading in the direction the Cardano Card itself had promised to go. Yet the notice doesn't announce that upgrade. It ends the partnership. Whether a non-custodial Cardano card still arrives in 2026, and whether Wirex or another provider would build it, hasn't been confirmed.

That's the gap between promise and delivery in this story. The roadmap pointed to self-custody. What actually shipped was the custodial version, and that version is the one closing.

What Holders Still Don't Know

The reporting available so far leaves several practical questions open:

  • What happens to balances left in the Wirex app after 31 October
  • Whether there are withdrawal steps or a migration deadline
  • What happens to earned cashback and to open loans
  • Whether the phase two card is still planned, and with whom

Until those answers arrive, the one firm detail is the date. The card works as normal through 31 October 2026, less than a year after it launched, and the self-custody version it promised has no confirmed home yet.
