Cardano Brings x402 Payments to Its Network

Cardano's first x402 release ships in TypeScript and has cleared a pre-production transaction, but mainnet deployment and commercial ADA payments remain

Cardano's first x402 release ships in TypeScript and has cleared a single transaction on the network's pre-production environment, but the software has not yet operated on mainnet, per a Sept. 21 report citing the facilitator's documentation.

The package gives developers a client, a server and a facilitator, the three pieces an AI agent needs to request, sign and settle a pay-per-use payment. Cardano Foundation engineers started from a specification accepted in June, with the initial release supporting TypeScript and Python planned next.

What x402 actually does

x402 turns the web's largely unused "402 Payment Required" response into a checkout built directly into an internet request. A service sends back its price and payment instructions, the agent signs a payment and receives the requested data or computing power after the transaction is verified, removing the need for accounts, card details or subscriptions. Coinbase created the standard in 2025 before contributing it to a Linux Foundation-backed organization whose members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services.

Where Cardano sits in the field

Solana, the XRP Ledger and several Ethereum-compatible networks already support x402, putting Cardano behind on deployment rather than on the standard itself. The race is not over who builds x402. It is over whose asset gets installed wherever developers eventually choose to wire machine payments.

A related report notes Ripple wants AI agents to pay in XRP and RLUSD, but the machine-to-machine settlement market is still mostly USDC. The ADA pitch lands in the same competitive slot as XRP and RLUSD, chasing a stablecoin that already routes most volume on the chains Cardano is racing against.

Cardano Still Has One Step to Go

Developers can begin integrating Cardano into x402 flows, but the release does not show agents already paying for commercial services with ADA at scale. The available report did not specify whether the pre-production transaction settled real ADA or test tokens, and no primary Cardano Foundation or x402 repository documentation was opened to confirm the engineering details beyond the page's summary.

The first mainnet x402 transaction on Cardano, settled through the Foundation's facilitator for an outside service rather than a test environment, would be the print that closes the gap with Solana and the XRP Ledger.
