CME’s XRP Futures Share Rises as XRP Rebounds 40%

XRP futures activity is shifting toward CME as the token rebounds nearly 40% in two weeks, with CME’s share of open interest rising to 17% while overall futures exposure declines.

XRP’s futures market is undergoing an unusual shift. While overall open interest has fallen sharply during the token’s latest rally, the share of futures exposure held on CME has increased significantly.

XRP climbed from roughly $0.99 on Aug. 17 to $1.38 on Aug. 31, marking a gain of almost 40%. At the same time, total XRP futures open interest across the market declined from 2.77 billion tokens to 2.34 billion.

The decline was largely concentrated outside CME.

CME bucks the broader XRP futures trend

CME, a regulated U.S. futures exchange widely used by professional trading firms and investment managers, saw XRP open interest move in the opposite direction.

CME’s outstanding XRP futures exposure increased from approximately 284 million XRP on Aug. 17 to 387 million on Aug. 31, representing a rise of about 36%.

Meanwhile, futures positions across the rest of the market dropped by approximately 533 million XRP or 21%.

As a result, CME’s share of total XRP futures open interest has grown from around 10% to 17% in just two weeks.

The shift is notable because institutional investors often prefer regulated venues when trading derivatives. CME’s growing share could therefore indicate greater participation from professional market players in XRP futures.

Traders are reducing leverage as XRP rises

The move is particularly interesting because XRP’s price has climbed while overall futures exposure has contracted.

Usually, a strong price rally accompanied by rising open interest can point to traders adding leveraged positions. This time, the opposite is happening across much of the market.

CME is the exception.

The development also follows the recent volatility in XRP derivatives. XRP previously experienced a major liquidation event after its rapid rally pushed the token into heavily overbought conditions, highlighting how quickly leveraged positioning can amplify moves in either direction.

At the same time, U.S. spot XRP ETFs have continued attracting investor money. The funds recorded $23.87 million in net inflows on Aug. 25, extending their inflow streak to nine consecutive trading days and taking cumulative inflows to roughly $1.59 billion. This provides another important backdrop to XRP’s recent recovery.

Leveraged funds remain net short

CFTC positioning data through Aug. 25 shows that leveraged funds were holding 892 long contracts against 3,206 shorts.

That left the group net short by the equivalent of approximately 116 million XRP, more than double the roughly 57 million XRP net short position recorded a week earlier.

XRP Futures Share

However, the figure should not automatically be interpreted as a straightforward bearish bet.

CFTC data cannot determine whether hedge funds and other leveraged traders are simply betting against XRP or using futures to hedge positions held elsewhere.

Other institutional categories moved differently. Dealers increased their net-long exposure by nearly 60 million XRP, while asset managers added approximately 28 million XRP.

CLARITY Act adds another catalyst

XRP’s derivatives market is also approaching another potential catalyst: the U.S. CLARITY Act, a crypto market-structure bill that has previously influenced XRP’s price.

A Senate procedural vote is expected in mid-September. XRP gained around 5% when the legislation cleared the Senate Banking Committee in May.

For now, the most notable feature of the market is the divergence between price and futures positioning. XRP has gained almost 40% in two weeks, yet overall futures exposure has declined while CME’s share has climbed.

That makes the shift toward the regulated exchange one of the key developments to watch as XRP’s recovery continues.
