The rally began after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the U.S. Treasury would increase its long-term debt buybacks to support liquidity in the Treasury market. Traders interpreted the move as potentially supportive for liquidity and risk assets, helping trigger a broader crypto recovery.
This rally extends the recovery that began on August 19, when improving sentiment, ETF inflows and expectations around U.S. crypto policy helped Bitcoin and major altcoins stabilize. The subsequent price surge caught heavily positioned short sellers off guard.
According to CoinGlass data, more than $3 billion in short positions were liquidated over 24 hours, marking the largest single-day short liquidation event in crypto markets. Bitcoin accounted for approximately $1.76 billion in liquidations, followed by Ethereum at $1.16 billion. Solana and HYPE recorded roughly $109 million and $58 million, respectively.
The forced buying created additional upward pressure, turning the initial rally into a broader short squeeze.
The move also followed President Donald Trump's August 19 meeting with crypto executives, where discussions included U.S. crypto policy and Bitcoin. The meeting helped revive attention around the stalled CLARITY Act, while prediction-market odds for the legislation reportedly increased from 19% to 24%.
The CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee meeting is another potential catalyst as regulators continue discussing a framework for digital-asset innovation in the United States.

The rally has brought a major increase in derivatives activity.
CoinGlass data shows total crypto open interest has climbed approximately 10% to $126.7 billion, its highest level since June 1.
Futures trading volumes have also more than doubled, rising from roughly $151 billion on August 19 to $325 billion.
Bitcoin futures volume increased by approximately 280%, while Ethereum futures activity jumped 373%. Hyperliquid recorded one of the largest increases, with futures volume rising 568% to approximately $9.83 billion.
The increase shows that traders are returning to leveraged positions as prices reach multi-month highs. However, the sharp rise in leverage could also increase volatility if the rally loses momentum.
Bitcoin's 11% rally has pushed BTC above its 200-day exponential moving average at approximately $71,543.
A sustained close above this level could represent an important technical shift. If buyers maintain control, the next major psychological target is around $75,000.
However, Bitcoin's Relative Strength Index has climbed to approximately 78, indicating that the asset is entering overbought territory following its rapid move from around $64,000 to $72,000.
If buyers become exhausted, BTC could fall back below the 200-day EMA and trigger profit-taking. In that scenario, the 50-day EMA near $64,870 becomes an important support level.
ETF demand could nevertheless provide additional support. Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $517 million in inflows, marking their strongest single-day inflow since May 4.
HYPE has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the latest rally.
The token climbed approximately 23% to $72 after Trump said the CFTC was working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a compliant manner.
That announcement helped HYPE break above the resistance of a bull-flag formation. The RSI near 64 indicates that bullish momentum remains strong without yet reaching the extreme levels seen in Bitcoin.
In the short term, HYPE could test the $78 area around the upper Bollinger Band.
The rally is particularly notable because Hyperliquid's potential U.S. expansion could significantly broaden access to its perpetual-futures ecosystem.
PEPE has also joined the market-wide rally, rising approximately 21% to $0.00000313.
The meme coin's market capitalization has climbed to around $1.29 billion, making PEPE one of the strongest performers among major meme tokens.
Derivatives activity is rising alongside the price. CoinGlass data shows PEPE futures volume increasing roughly 346% to $797 million, while open interest has also increased sharply.
If bullish sentiment persists and buying pressure continues, PEPE could target the $0.0000040 resistance level.
However, the token's outlook remains highly dependent on broader market sentiment. A reversal in Bitcoin or a reduction in retail buying could quickly put pressure on PEPE after its sharp advance.
The August 20 rally has transformed market sentiment in less than 24 hours. Bitcoin has reclaimed a major long-term technical level, ETF inflows remain strong and altcoins are benefiting from a massive short squeeze.
But the speed of the move also creates risks.
Bitcoin's elevated RSI, rapidly rising open interest and record liquidations suggest that leverage is now playing a major role in the rally. A sustained close above the 200-day EMA would strengthen the bullish case, while a rejection could lead to significant profit-taking.
For HYPE and PEPE, continued momentum will depend heavily on whether the broader market can hold its gains.
The key question now is whether the historic short squeeze marks the beginning of a sustained crypto recovery or simply creates another sharp rally that needs to cool before the next move.
