Think of them as the real engine of Bittensor. Each subnet contributes their role to make decentralized AI faster, smarter, and more effective. TAO subnets play a super important role.
The importance of these subnets has raised questions in the hearts of smart investors: should you be paying more attention to TAO subnets than $TAO itself? Let’s answer that next.
First of all, this is a tricky question, but super important. $TAO is the base layer one token, powering the entire ecosystem. It gets value from how many people want to participate in subnets. It’s more like a fuel that miners need to stake and validate. $TAO is the more visible and liquid asset. So, if Bittensor grows as a project, then it’s good news for $TAO. It’s like the face of the entire party.
However, subnet tokens are at an early stage. This means they are high-risk, high-reward. These tokens represent specialized value, like tokens that capture AI search (Versa), memory (Synapse), or reasoning (Zeno). If a subnet becomes dominant in its niche, its token could outperform TAO by a large margin. But that’s a big “if.”
Investing in $TAO is for those who prefer long-term safety and infrastructure. Meanwhile, subnet tokens are early picks and have more potential if you get the right one. For those interested in getting subnets, here’s how to do that.
Getting subnet tokens isn’t as easy as grabbing stuff on Uniswap. Each TAO subnet has its own validator and reward system. So, when a miner participates in a subnet and contributes useful tasks like data ranking, they get rewarded in that subnet’s native token.
Now, most tokens are not currently available on major centralized exchanges. However, there are some ways to trade them. This includes peer-to-peer, through OTC deals, or using DEXs that support Bittensor-compatible tokens.
Plus, some communities like Tensorplex are beginning to build up liquidity. So, to get in, you have to join Discord groups or subnet communities and watch for announcements.

OpenKaito is another AI-focused project on TAO. This time, the focus is on the brainpower behind how AI understands language. OpenKaito is focused on developing text embedding models. With these models, AI can easily grasp the meaning and context of words. This makes AI super efficient for chat boxes, search engines, and other functions.
Nova is an active part of the Bittensor network. It is a new project. So, the team is working on specifying its focus clearly. What we do know is that it’s contributing to the broader decentralized AI space. It could most likely be working on innovations or support tools for other subnets. So, it could be worth keeping tabs on.
The last one on today’s list, Zeus, is another good subnet on TAO. Zeus is focused on climate. Backed by Ørpheus AI, this subnet is built to forecast environmental data using powerful models and real-world datasets. Zeus seeks to provide accurate predictions about the weather. That’s a game-changer for that industry.
Bittensor has an ecosystem brewing with supportive subnets. And these subnets are also lucrative and are a good investment option. However, we advise that you do your research.

In the Bittensor ecosystem, builders(Subnet owners, miners and validators) are rewarded with TAO, the native token, based on their performance. This healthy competition improve the overall efficiency of the ecosystem.
Bittensor definitely needs a mobile wallet like the Phantom wallet on Solana. Or a user friendly UX where you can view and invest in subnets in a few taps. It is still way too complicated to buy subnet tokens for the average joe.
