Citi Bank Opens Crypto On/Off Ramps

With the Genius Act signed, more banks are likely to launch their own stablecoins.

Citibank is officially entering the crypto space. During its latest earnings call for Q2 2025, CEO Jane Fraser confirmed that the bank is focused on building a robust digital assets infrastructure.

A key part of that would include launching on- and off-ramps for crypto. Such an offer implies that Citibank customers will soon be able to transfer funds between fiat and cryptocurrency directly from their Citi accounts.

Beyond this, Fraser also mentioned that the bank is considering launching its stablecoin. While such plans are not yet concrete and still in the early stages, they mirror Citi’s strong commitment to digital assets.

However, Fraser identified crypto-fiat integration and tokenized deposits as the bank’s current priorities. Both additions will unlock new opportunities for Citibank, enabling the bank to stay at the forefront of the changing financial landscape. Beyond changing the bank’s internal operations, these tools will appeal to new clients, especially crypto-savvy customers.

Interestingly, most banks and financial institutions are finally warming up to digital assets. Fraser describes digital assets as the next evolution of financial services, similar to the emergence of banks. Banks and other financial institutions were initially hesitant to join the cryptocurrency wave, but changing policies have prompted a shift in stance.

Trump Signs GENIUS Act into Law

For example, U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed the GENIUS Act, the first regulation for crypto in the United States. The GENIUS Act establishes the initial legal framework for safeguarding stablecoins. The bill, among other things, clearly states which assets qualify to be called stablecoins.

Signing the GENIUS Act now gives banks and non-banking platforms a door to launch their stablecoins. So, crypto experts predict that more notable financial companies will enter the digital assets market.

That trend is already happening. Deutsche Bank, a top German bank, recently expanded its crypto custody services to cover more tokenized assets and stablecoins. It’s another sign that big banks are starting to take crypto seriously, not just as an investment class, but as a core part of global finance infrastructure.
