Coinbase Users Hit by $46M in Phishing Scams

As crypto prices climb, scammers are coming out of the woodwork. They use tricks like address poisoning and wallet spoofing to steal funds.

ZachXBT revealed that multiple Coinbase-linked wallets were targeted this month. One major theft involved 400 Bitcoin, worth around $34.9 million, stolen from a single wallet on March 28th.

Phishing Scams Are on the Rise—Stay Alert

Screenshots from blockchain explorer Blockchair confirm this massive loss. After uncovering this case, ZachXBT discovered several other suspected thefts from Coinbase users, bringing the total stolen to over $46 million in just two weeks. Phishing scams often trick users into sending funds to fraudulent wallet addresses that closely resemble legitimate ones. These scams include:

  • Address poisoning – Scammers send small transactions to users with addresses similar to their real ones, hoping victims mistakenly send funds to the wrong place.
  • Wallet spoofing – Fraudsters create fake versions of popular wallets to deceive users into sharing their private information.

With more people jumping into crypto, scammers are pulling out all the stops to line their pockets. If you’re not careful, you could fall into their trap: hook, line, and sinker.

Coinbase Responds

Coinbase is aware of the situation and is investigating the claims. Jaclyn Sales, director of communications at Coinbase, issued a statement warning users about phishing scams. “Coinbase will never call you or ask for your login credentials, API key, or two-factor authentication codes. We will also never ask you to transfer funds,” Sales said.

She emphasized that if anyone contacts a user claiming to be from Coinbase and asks for personal information or asset transfers, it’s a scam.

How to Stay Safe from Phishing Scams

To protect yourself from these scams, keep these tips in mind:

  • Double-check wallet addresses before sending crypto.
  • Never share login credentials or security codes with anyone.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for extra security.
  • Be skeptical of unsolicited messages claiming to be from Coinbase or other exchanges.
