Ethereum developers are still working out some kinks on the Holesky testnet, which could push back the mainnet activation.
On March 5, 2025, Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade was successfully deployed on the Sepolia testnet at 7:29 am UTC.
Pectra Hits Sepolia, but Holesky Issues May Delay Mainnet
The upgrade, which consists of 11 separate Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), went live “with a perfect proposal rate,” according to Terence, a core Ethereum contributor. This marks a major milestone for the project as developers work to improve Ether staking, Layer-2 (L2) scalability, and overall network capacity.
The Sepolia upgrade is a major step in the process, but there’s still some work to do. Ethereum’s team had already activated Pectra on the Holesky testnet on February 24. Unfortunately, the upgrade failed to finalize, leaving developers scratching their heads. As a result, there’s a possibility that the mainnet launch could be delayed until these issues are fully addressed.

The Ethereum Foundation had previously confirmed that once both the Holesky and Sepolia testnets were successfully upgraded to Pectra, they would pick an activation epoch for the mainnet. But with the Holesky upgrade still not settled, the timeline for the mainnet release is up in the air.
