BCSC Uncovers $9.5M Misuse of User Funds by ezBtc

This crypto exchange, founded by David Smillie, was once a prominent player in Canada’s cryptocurrency trading scene. The platform claimed to provide a secure environment for users to buy, sell, and store their cryptocurrencies. However, these claims have been exposed as fraudulent.

The BCSC, a provincial regulator responsible for overseeing securities activities in British Columbia, conducted a thorough investigation into ezBtc’s operations. The findings were damning: Smillie and the ezBtc platform had been misappropriating customer funds for their purposes, rather than securely storing them as promised. The BCSC panel determined that Smillie used the misappropriated funds primarily for gambling, betraying the trust of thousands of customers.

EzBtc went offline permanently around September 2019, leaving many users unable to access their accounts or withdraw their funds. Despite customer complaints, the full extent of the fraud was only revealed by the BCSC’s investigation. The platform was officially dissolved in 2022, long after the damage had been done.

The case of this crypto exchange highlights the risks associated with trusting unregulated or poorly regulated exchanges. The promise of high returns and secure storage can be enticing. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder that due diligence is critical. Specially when choosing a platform for trading and storing digital assets.
