EEZ Tests Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction, but Fee Gains Are Unproven

EEZ has tested an atomic transaction between Ethereum mainnet and an L2. Here is what changes for fees, capital efficiency, and what remains unconfirmed.

The Ethereum Economic Zone has tested an atomic transaction between Ethereum mainnet and a layer-2 network, a project contributor said. Eduardo Antuña Díez shared the transaction and called it the "first atomic cross-chain" L1-to-L2 transaction. It moved 0.001 ETH and included a state update for a rollup.

If you hold assets across several networks, this kind of settlement is the change you are watching for. The test is a real milestone for the framework. It is not yet proof of cheaper fees. The report does not quantify the cost savings, and the specific L2 that received the transaction is unnamed.

What an Atomic Transaction Changes

An atomic transaction means linked actions across networks either all succeed or are all reversed if any part fails. The project describes the mechanism as follows.

In an atomic transaction, linked actions across networks either all succeed or are all reversed if any part fails.

If you have ever bridged assets between chains, you know the process. It adds steps and separate risks for your position. EEZ aims to remove that middle layer. Under the framework, a smart contract on an EEZ rollup can call a contract on mainnet or another rollup, receive a response, and use it within one transaction.

Why Liquidity and Fees Matter Most

The project aims to reconnect liquidity and applications spread across separate L2 networks. Today that liquidity lives in silos because protocols maintain separate deployments across each chain.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst said the lack of synchronous composability forces protocols to maintain separate deployments across L2s, fragmenting liquidity into multiple markets.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst previously told Cointelegraph that the lack of synchronous composability forces protocols to maintain separate deployments across L2s, fragmenting liquidity into multiple markets.

Under EEZ, protocols deploy once instead of maintaining multiple versions per chain. Users do not need explicit bridging steps to move assets, positions or identity across environments. ETH remains the gas token regardless of where execution happens. This is the mechanism behind the promised savings.

However, the test did not measure the savings. The report does not quantify costs, gas savings or liquidity aggregation effects from the test. The transaction carried a fixed 0.001 ETH, so we do not know how much of that would have been spent on bridging fees in a non-EEZ path.

Who Is Building and Owning This

EEZ is a ZK-proven EVM rollup framework co-funded by the Ethereum Foundation, built by Gnosis and ZisK. It was announced at EthCC Cannes on 29 March 2026.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst said no L1 changes are necessary at all to make this work. She added that single-slot finality and shorter block times would help reduce the dependency on Ethereum finality.

The project is being designed as shared Ethereum infrastructure that is credibly neutral, not owned by Gnosis or any single entity. The EEZ Association is a Swiss entity set up to develop it as open source.

Jakub Gregus, co-founder of decentralized finance protocol Hydration, called the demonstration one of the most important milestones in crypto. He is right to be excited. That enthusiasm is not proof of savings.

Founding ecosystem partners include Aave, Titan, Beaver Build, Centrifuge and xStocks. Major block builders Titan, Beaver and Flashbots support the execution format from day 1.

What to Watch Next

Partners plan to leverage the framework from the mainnet launch. Until then, the fee reduction and capital efficiency claims remain theoretical.

The transaction hash and exact block timestamp are also not public. You cannot independently verify the settlement on the chain yet. Watch for those details if you want to check the work yourself.
