Ethereum's Three Bearish Signals, Tested Against a $24.8M Inflow

Ether fell 4.4% on the week as three large holders moved about $75 million of ETH toward exchanges, while ETFs ended a 10-day outflow streak.

Ether traded near $2,499 on October 14, down 4.4% over the past week, and three readings of demand point the same way: large holders moving coins toward exchanges, exchange reserves rising on the daily measure, and a US spot ETF category that had just come off ten straight sessions of outflows.

None of the three is settled. The ETF streak ended on October 13 with a $24.8 million inflow. The reserve signal depends on which measure you pick. And the same week's on-chain data also shows a wallet buying.

Three Holders Moved About $75 Million of ETH Toward Exchanges

Lookonchain flagged the moves over the past week.

  • Wallet 0x8c58 sold its last 9,996 ETH for about $25 million. The address had accumulated 52,001 ETH worth $112.4 million at an average of $2,162 and exited the whole position at an average of $2,632, a profit of roughly $24.48 million.
  • Patricio Worthalter, founder of the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP), deposited 10,000 ETH worth about $25.05 million into Gemini, after sending 4,000 ETH worth about $10.02 million there on October 11.
  • pinosaur.eth, an early buyer who spent $373,000 on 7,459 ETH nine years ago, unstaked all 9,618 ETH ($24.58 million) and sent it to Kraken.

Together the three come to roughly $74.6 million. A deposit is not a sale, but it is the step before one, and the direction is the same in all three cases: coins that were sitting in self-custody or staked now sit where they can be sold in seconds.

Lookonchain's feed carried the other side too. A wallet added 13,036.32 ETH over 24 hours, worth $32.59 million, part of more than $100 million of ETH bought since October 11.

Exchange Reserves: A Daily Figure up, a 30-Day Average Down

CryptoQuant data puts exchange reserves at about 14.93 million ETH on October 14, up from roughly 14.59 million in late September. More coins on venues is the standard bearish read: it means more supply is one order away from the market.

The same provider's 30-day simple moving average, a slower lens, says the opposite. It was 14,742,387.9 ETH on October 9, down 30.21% from 21,124,548.6 ETH on July 18, 2025, a multi-year low. Binance's 30-day average fell 256,187.79 ETH, or 6.69%, to 3,574,345.43 ETH from August 1.

These are different measurements and should not be swapped into each other's sentences. A daily level can rise while the 30-day average it feeds keeps falling. Read daily, reserves are at a one-month high. Read on the average, they are at a multi-year low. The two cannot both be the headline, and CryptoQuant's own pages were not reachable for this piece, so both figures rest on pages that quote its data.

ETFs: Ten Sessions Out, Then $24.8 Million In

US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded 10 straight trading days of net outflows from September 29 to October 12. By October 9 the streak had taken about $697 million. Through October 12 the total was about $782.6 million.

October 6 did most of the work. Net outflows that day were $201.9 million, and BlackRock's ETHA was the entire number: its $201.9 million redemption matched the category outflow. Grayscale's ETHE added $25.8 million on October 7 and $6.1 million on October 8.

The streak broke on October 13 with a $24.8 million inflow, the first positive session since about $17 million came in on September 28. October net outflows still stand near $695.4 million, per SoSoValue data.

Size is the test. The category held $15.83 billion in net assets on October 14, against $13.20 billion of total inflows since launch, so a $24.8 million day is under 0.2% of everything the funds have taken in. Between October 5 and 9, net assets fell from $17.69 billion to $15.71 billion, and only about $542 million of that $1.98 billion drop was investor withdrawals. The rest was Ether's price.

Price: Below Both 4-Hour Averages

Ether is down 6.47% since October 1 and trades about 49% below its August 24, 2025 record of $4,946.05. Regaining that level would take a gain of roughly 98%.

On the 4-hour chart on October 13, the price sat at $2,507.30, below the 50-period exponential moving average at $2,548.13 and the 200-period at $2,572.30, with Bollinger resistance at $2,567.93. Reclaiming the 200-period average is the simplest thing that would break that structure.

CryptoQuant's Coinbase Premium Index, which compares ETH's price on Coinbase with offshore venues, fell to about -0.1173, its lowest reading in two months. A negative print means US buyers were bidding less than offshore ones.

The Signals Agree on Direction, Not on Size

The bearish case here rests on direction rather than size. The ETF outflows were heavy, but most of the money that left the funds was price, not investors, and one $24.8 million session ended the streak. The whale sales are large for the addresses involved and small for a category holding $15.83 billion in net assets, where another wallet added more than the biggest seller sold.

What would confirm the signal is easy to state and harder to wait for: the daily reserve figure keeping its climb, and ETF inflows not flipping back to outflows. Until one of those breaks, three signals point the same way and disagree about how much it matters.
