FBI Warns of Fake Crypto Law Firms

FBI warns that fake “crypto recovery” law firms are scamming scam victims for even more money.

FBI Warns of Fake Crypto Law Firms

The FBI is warning that some Crypto Law Firms claiming they can help recover stolen funds are nothing more than scams themselves. If you’ve lost money to a crypto scam, you might feel desperate to get it back.

These scam Crypto Law Firms are deceiving victims into paying extra funds and even giving out their details, and overnight, they are in an even worse spot than they were before.

What’s Happening?

The FBI issued a new public alert, warning that criminals pose as legal experts or “crypto recovery law firms” to defraud victims. The scammers promise to restore your stolen crypto assets, but their true goal is to steal them.

The bureau raised this warning based on other alerts it released in August 2023 and June 2024. The scammers’ request for cryptocurrency payments or prepaid gift cards also raises serious concerns.
The FBI’s advice? Be cautious if:

  • Unexpectedly, a law firm contacts you.
  • They claim to have insider knowledge of your scam case.
  • They ask you to pay in crypto or gift cards.

Why the Warning Matters

Blockchain security company CertiK reported that hackers, scammers, and exploiters stole about $2.5 billion worth of crypto in the first half of 2025. As many exchanges or companies restore stolen funds, some of them leave many victims to their own devices. That’s when scammers step in, pretending to be the solution.

When the FBI seizes digital assets linked to criminal activity, victims get their compensation first, and any leftover funds go toward the U.S. national crypto stockpile. In April, Dallas FBI agents seized $2.4 million in Bitcoin that belonged to a hacking group, but authorities have not yet taken it up legally.

Online fraud is not the only form of crypto crime. These criminals have even gone as far as kidnapping crypto holders and demanding ransom in some extreme cases. Alena Vranova, the founder of SatoshiLabs, estimated that scammers target at least one new Bitcoiner globally every week.
